Flat sites are rare in Indiana state parks. Shakamak State Park Campground, set within a wooded stretch near Jasonville, delivers them consistently, with gravel pads that multiple campers have noted are level across the board, a detail that makes a real difference for RV setup and tent sleeping alike.
The campground divides roughly into two zones worth knowing before you book. Electric-only sites tend to sit in more open, sun-exposed areas, while sites without water hookups generally have heavier tree cover and more shade. As Lisa M. notes, "most of the spaces that had both water and electric were mostly in the sun." Sites near the lake exist, though reviewers caution there is a steep bank between the site and the water, and lake views are limited by vegetation. Spacing between sites is generous enough that campers report not feeling crowded, even on busier weekends. Cell coverage is thin. Verizon users consistently report one bar or less, so plan accordingly.
As Cynthia K. puts it plainly, "this is a fishing park." Three lakes totaling around 400 acres allow only electric motors, which keeps boat noise low. A fishing pier reserved for campers sits near the electric campground. Seven hiking trails run through the surrounding woods, all described as well-maintained, with one route passing a sealed-off historic coal mine. A large pool with slides operates seasonally, though in August it may only be open on weekends, so check the schedule in advance. A camp store carries bait, firewood, and basic supplies.
The campground runs year-round, though early-season visits may come with limited amenities. Water hookups and shower facilities may not be available before the main season opens. Pull-through sites accommodate rigs up to 35 feet, and reviewers with travel trailers report straightforward access and helpful staff. Bring an extension cord if you're in a pull-through and want the outlet near your door. The bathhouses draw consistent praise for cleanliness, which stands out compared to many comparable facilities. Anglers, hikers, and RV campers looking for reliable infrastructure and wooded sites with flat ground will find Shakamak a dependable choice in western Indiana.
