Kayaking through mangrove tunnels, paddling out to an Atlantic sandbar, or casting a line from the kayak launch are among the main draws at Curry Hammock State Park Campground, situated along the Atlantic side of US 1 near mile marker 56 in Marathon, Florida. The park rents kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes on-site, and cyclists can cross the highway to connect with the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, a paved path that runs into Marathon. Kite surfers frequent the recreation area, making for active shoreline watching even on rest days.
The 28 sites sit on paved, well-leveled ground with low-growing vegetation between them that provides visual separation without offering much shade. Ocean-facing sites, particularly numbers 7, 8, 9, 22, and 23, give the clearest sightlines toward the water, though vegetation can block the view from chairs or picnic tables depending on the site. Denis P. notes the campground feels "quiet, thoughtful," with anchor rings already fitted along the perimeter for tent campers dealing with coastal wind. The bathhouse earns consistent praise across reviews: clean, well-maintained, with hot water that takes a moment to arrive.
The shoreline itself is rocky and weedy in the Keys fashion. It is not a swimming beach. Seaweed and rotting sea grass can produce a strong smell depending on wind direction, and the water near the kayak launch is shallow. Jane L. recommends kayaking out to a sandbar for swimming rather than going in at the launch. A bonfire pit and picnic tables sit along the campground shoreline, where sunrises and sunsets are worth the walk down from the sites. Wildlife sightings, including crocodiles near the mangrove side, have been reported.
Cell service runs from one to three bars on AT&T, and Starlink users report solid coverage. Bugs are a real factor, especially for tent campers in summer months, and the open layout means midday heat builds quickly without tree cover. The campground stays open year-round, with reservations available and competitive to book. Campers looking for nearby alternatives can browse campgrounds near Marathon Shores or compare options among campgrounds near Curry Hammock State Park, including Jolly Roger Travel Park and Sun Outdoors Marathon to the northeast. Book as far in advance as possible, especially for winter months when the Keys draw heavy traffic.
