Redwood canopy overhead, no cell signal, and Highway 36 running just outside the fence: Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park Campground delivers a specific kind of experience, and knowing what that means in practice helps set expectations before arrival. The campground sits within Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park outside Carlotta, tucked into a river valley roughly 15 miles from the coast. Coastal fog regularly settles into the valley, keeping temperatures cool even through summer, and shade is consistent throughout the sites.
Road noise is the most consistent issue reviewers raise. Highway 36 passes close enough that logging trucks and other vehicles are audible from every site, including those set back from the road. Campers who scored riverside spots report some buffer, but none report escaping the noise entirely. Sites run small and close together, with overhanging limbs and root-disrupted surfaces making access difficult for anything longer than about 19 feet. RVs should note the 24-foot maximum and the sharp-angled turns required to reach many spots.
The river is the main draw. Water access is warm enough for swimming by mid-June, and Anthony C. notes the sites are "well taken care of," with flush toilets and coin-operated showers on site. Hiking trails leave directly from the campground, though at least one trail is steep enough to warrant trekking poles. Wood is available for purchase at the camp office, and the dump station accommodates those with self-contained rigs. Reservations are available and recommended. Campers wanting a quieter base might consider Van Duzen County Park - Pamplin Grove a few miles to the west along the Van Duzen River.
