Hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching are the main draws at Elk Fork Campground, a small Forest Service site along US Highway 14/16/20 in Shoshone National Forest, roughly 28 miles west of Cody on the road to Yellowstone's east entrance. The campground sits near a creek and river, and at least one site backs directly up to the water. A horse corral and trailer parking area accommodate equestrian visitors, and the camp host actively briefs arriving campers on recent bear activity in the area. This is grizzly country, and bear spray is strongly recommended.
Sites are flat and level but run small, which limits maneuvering room for larger rigs. The campground has around 12 sites and handles vehicles up to 22 feet. Wapiti Campground sits just to the northeast, and Big Game Campground is roughly a mile east, so options exist in the corridor if Elk Fork is full. That said, its small size means it often has availability when larger campgrounds fill up.
Each site includes a bear-resistant food box, fire ring, and picnic table. Vault toilets and trash service are on-site. No potable water, hookups, or dump station are available, so bring enough drinking water for your stay. Clearwater Campground is a couple of miles west if you need a different setup. The season runs from late May through mid-September, and at $10 per night, Elk Fork is one of the more affordable stops along this stretch of highway.
