Expansive BLM land stretches between Cody and Greybull, offering campers multiple dispersed sites across rocky dirt roads that accommodate rigs up to 26 feet. The area provides flat camping spots with existing stone fire pits scattered throughout the rolling grassland terrain.
Wind dominates the camping experience here, though it typically calms after dark. The open landscape offers few natural windbreaks, requiring campers to position carefully against small hills for shelter. Laura M. notes "No water or any other amenities so pack in and pack out." Wildlife sightings include pronghorn antelope herds and coyotes that vocalize at night, while scattered bones from various animals dot the landscape.
The road system branches multiple times from Highway 16, with satellite navigation helpful for route selection. Most campers choose spots near the entrance to avoid increasingly rough terrain deeper into the area. A flagpole marks one popular camping zone with 360-degree views. Cell service works across major carriers, though Verizon reception can be spotty while Starlink performs well.
Hunters frequent the area during antelope season, and bullet casings around sites reflect the area's shooting use. Road noise from nearby Highway 16 carries over the hills but remains minimal at night. The proximity to Cody makes this a convenient base for visiting Yellowstone or the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. James B. found "Sites were clean and definitely worth a look."
Campers wanting established amenities can consider Cody KOA for a more developed alternative.
