High Plains Camping is under new ownership and management since 2022. The managers, Jana and Andy are very wonderful, very helpful. They have a lot of plans to reconstruct the facility. It’s tired, but clean. They do have a cafe “Grub n Chug”. Great pizza and beer at a reasonable price. The camp sites in section 300/400 are spacious with full utilities.
For $80 bucks I expected more. The place is run down and almost feels abandoned. The ring in the pool suggests the water level has been low for a long time. The H sites are somewhat swampy. It may have been quite the place back in its time, but it is in sole serious need of TLC. If it had been $20 instead of $80 I’d give it 2 stars.
Fantastic spot. Well maintained road. Clean. Beautiful vistas, Elk, etc. A bit windy, but no complaints here. Very minor road noise during the day, but nothing but crickets and Coyotes at night. Would definitely come again.
Despite mid week in May most “select” sites were taken. Many areas where you used to be able to camp have been signed “no camping.” VERY restrictive. That said, this place is special. Views are world class. Please be respectful and leave no trace so we can keep this gem open. We’ve been here several times and it never disappoints.
Spent just one night while in transit to Colorado. Lots of spots for selection. Quiet. Some good views. Spectacular sunsets. Even a double rainbow with some rain.
When we arrived it was howling wind and blowing sand. We worried the side of our van would be nothing but primer in the morning. Fortunately by the morning it was sunny and calm with stunning vistas. The area is exposed with few secluded opportunities. Despite mid week in May, many spots were taken. That said, it was so beautiful we would not hesitate to visit again.
We went further up near intersection of 157 and 158. Lots of open spots and almost no one around. Height of your rig could limit site selection. Even with high roof Sprinter we had some issues with low branches. Lots of shade. No real views, but lots of privacy. Some trash. Not horrible, but a good reminder to pick up after yourself so we can keep these public lands open.
We had planned to stay the night here as a mid point stop between Bryce Canyon and Mono Lake. Pulled in and every space was open. But the vibe was sketchy. Toilet paper and trash everywhere. Close to the road and minimal privacy. Despite being tired of the road we decided to push on for another 4-5 hours. I would only consider this if you were simply too exhausted to go further. Then I’d lock the doors and sleep lightly…
Easy access. We are in a awd Sprinter, but any vehicle driven slow will work. Many open spots, despite arriving on a Saturday evening. Would definitely come again. Buggy though. And an ok view, but not spectacular. Some trees for shade which is good since today it was 104.
