Rocky outcrops ring most of Lake Ellen's shoreline, and a small island sits near the middle of the water. Set within Colville National Forest in northeastern Washington, this US Forest Service campground splits into two distinct sections: a west side with more open, dispersed sites, and an east side where thick vegetation creates more separation between sites. Neither side has a direct lake view from camp, though a short distance down the road reveals open sightlines toward the water.
Water access shapes most visits here. A dock provides a fishing platform, and eagles and osprey are regularly spotted diving into the lake, which gives some indication of what lives below the surface. Anglers report the fishing has potential, though figuring out the right lures takes some trial and error. The lake does not allow motorized watercraft for skiing, making it quieter on the water than many lake campgrounds in the region. Hikers can loop around the lake on foot, and the surrounding forest adds to the sense of distance from developed areas.
Amenities are basic but functional: vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and dumpsters are all on site. RVs up to 22 feet can be accommodated, and the campground is ADA accessible. Cell service is available. Aaron M. sums up the draw simply: "Not a ski lake," which for many campers is exactly the point. The nearby Lake Ellen West Campground is frequently noted as the preferred of the two areas. This campground suits anglers, hikers, and campers who want dog-friendly camping around Colville National Forest without a lot of boat traffic on the water.
