Sportsman Campground, near Radford, Virginia, is a straightforward spot for those passing through or looking for a quick stay. It’s right on the New River, which offers some nice views, but keep in mind that the I-81 overpass is just overhead, so it can get a bit noisy.

This campground has basic amenities like electric hookups and a sanitary dump station, making it suitable for RVs and tents. Some visitors have mentioned the convenience of having a gas station and a small store on-site, which can be handy for grabbing essentials. One camper noted, “It sits right on the river with a gas station and store onsite,” highlighting the practical aspects of the location.

While the atmosphere can be lively, with some long-term residents around, it’s a decent option for a night or two. Fishing is popular here, and the nearby bait shop makes it easy to get set up. Just be prepared for a tight fit if you’re bringing a larger RV, as maneuvering can be tricky.

If you’re looking for a no-frills camping experience with easy access to the river, Sportsman Campground might just do the trick. Just remember to manage your expectations and enjoy the natural surroundings!

Washed out by Hurricane Helene

This campground was pretty much washed out by Hurricane Helene.  It apparently was owned by the family that owns the gas station on site.  The gas station was flooded out and will need to be completely rebuilt.

The dirt under the campground remains and there are a few campers here still despite there being no more services available.  Two tents were set up.  One had a generator.  One trailer was here.  The water level is down now but there's still debris that needs cleaning up.  The roads were not washed out so this is still a fairly easy to access site being it is right off I-81.

10/10 neverrrrr recommend

very very beautiful view, BUT everyone was VERY disrespectful. it says zero dollars a night and they told us we were stealing electricity for our bus?. they said that it was a $500 a month type of place, so if you don’t have that drive up to the next spot. all of my neighbors were rude. the place was trashed and there was absolutely no room to even park or be at peace.. the gas station lady who owns it called the police on us for NOTHING... never again will i go to this place. i’m very disappointed in what just happened and truly shocked..

Cozy but loud

Other than the interstate directly overhead, its a nice place. Its also very tight. I have a 35’ BP and it was difficult getting it in. But, it sits right on the river with a gas station and store onsite. No sewer hook up but a dump-station was on site. Good for an overnight.

On the River but under a bridge

Yep this campground is on the New River. Great but directly overhead is I-81 overpass so take that into consideration. It is reasonable priced we have Passport America so it was under $16 for the 1 night we stayed. Office is in the gas station as is the restaurant. Check in 11 am (we got here at 8 pm) check out is 11 pm. Young lady at front desk was super nice. Bath house is very close and clean. There are a lot of fulltimers living here so call ahead to get a site. We will be back though the fishing is great and bait house is right here. I feed the fish so that is perfect for me.
