Nestled in a landscape of mountains, open meadows and pioneer cabins, Doughton Park Campground is surrounded by 30 miles (48 km) of hiking trails offering opportunities to view wildlife as well as get a feel for the lives of those who lived here long ago. Originally known as The Bluffs, the area came by its present name in honor of Congressman Robert L. Doughton, a long-time advocate and supporter of the Parkway.
Over 30 miles of trails are available varying from strenuous to easy. Bicycles and motorized vehicles are prohibited on trails. Mileage listed is only traveling one way. Double the trail mileage to include out and back trip. Trail elevations can change more than 2,000 feet as trails descend into the Basin Cove Creek area from the parkway. Maps available on the Blue Ridge Parkway.gov website. Bluff Mountain Trail (7.5 miles) offers many scenic vistas and traverses relatively flat terrain. The trail runs near the parkway and is accessible from many locations along its route from Brinegar Cabin to Basin Cove Overlook. Cedar Ridge Trail (4.4 miles) descends a forested ridgeline to Grassy Gap Fire Road. Trailhead is located at the Brinegar Cabin. Grassy Gap Fire Road (6.1 miles) is wide enough for hikers and horseback riders to travel side by side. The trail starts at Milepost 243.9 and ambles down the mountainside past the primitive campground to State Route 1730 (Longbottom Road). Horseback riders must enter and exit at Longbottom Road. Flat Rock Ridge Trail (5.0) miles begins on the mountain-top meadow of Basin Cove Overlook. And ends on the damp, cool banks of Basin Cove Creek. NC Thurmond Game Lands and bear sanctuary border the south side of the trail. Basin Cove Creek Trail (3.2 miles) is accessible only from the grassy Gap Fire Road at the Long Bottom Road (State Hwy 1730). A 1.7-mile hike is required to reach the beginning of the Basin Cove Creek. It winds past cascading waterfalls to the century-old Caudill Cabin, former home of the Martin Caudill family. Part of the once-thriving Basin cove Community, this cabin was one of the few structures that withstood the devasting 1916 flood. Prepare for over 26 creek crossings on this trail. The total trip one way is 4.9 miles and 9.8 miles for the total trip. Bluff Ridge Primitive Trail (2.7 miles) is the shortest but steepest route into Basin Cove. The strenuous climb up the trail makes the hike seem much longer. Trailhead location is in the Bluffs Picnic Area. Fodder Stack Trail (1.4 miles roundtrip) shows off its delicate display of wildflowers in the spring. It is the easiest hike through a mixture of pine and hardwood forest with a short, steep brief beginning. Recommended for families. Trailhead is at Wildcat Rocks Overlook. The Brinegar Cabin dates from about 1885 and was the home of Martin Brinegar and his family. Brinegar was a cobbler as well as a farmer. His home is open Memorial Day weekend days through October. Hand-loom weaving and other craft demonstrations are often given during the summer months. The one-room Caudill Cabin exhibit can be viewed from the scenic Wildcat Rocks (milepost 240.6). Historic Cemetery: near milepost marker 245.5. The cemetery contains some three dozen graves dating from the 1880's to more recent times. The Basin Cove Creek complex (mileposts 238 - 244) (located off the Parkway on Longbottom Road) has Rainbow and Brook Trout where the streams are stocked. Anyone with a valid Virginia or North Carolina fishing license is welcome, but please check with the visitor center for any special regulations.
Rolling ridgetop meadows and steep mountainsides characterize the 7,000-acre Doughton Park. The elevation is a cool 3688 feet. It is one of the best places along the motor road to view white-tailed deer, raccoons, red and gray foxes, and bobcats. Visitors can enjoy spectacular shows of flame azalea and rhododendron in the late spring and fields of Dense Blazing Stars in mid to late July. Nearby Bluffs picnic area features open areas for night sky viewing with limited light pollution. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic byway that follows the high crests of the central and southern Appalachians for 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.

I was so pleased with the reviews & photos I saw here on the Dyrt.. and then so let down with the reality. The site we were assigned upon arrival was right next door to a "resident" fifth wheel that appears to have been there since the campground opened, and two sites down from that is another just like it. Moldy, dirty, moss was dripping from every orafice of both RVs. A smell, something like a couch that has been chain-smoked on for 30 years, eminated from the one beside us, especially when the sun came out. Aside from that, our site was small, had a concrete "patio" that had this crazy rickety black iron fence around it that is DEFinitely a hazard - if leaned against, it would have just fallen right over. The picnic table wasn't even really on our site, as far as I could tell. It was mostly rotten and was closer to the Breaking Bad RV than it was to our site. Were we just supposed to move it? Who really knows. The bathrooms were just okay, I guess. There was only one in the area where we were near 20 RV sites, and there was a sign on the door that said, "Mop up after yourself" and there was definitely a mop just sitting there in the bathroom... but the shower had warm water, so... The worst part is that I didn't really feel comfortable letting my kids just roam free at this campground. Even though the little beach-y area next to the river was pretty to look at, there was glass all over the "sand" and I couldn't let them be barefoot EVER. Also, the "landscaping" was clearly not taken care of at all. The lesson I learned about private campgrounds - ask if they allow long-term stays and if they do ask what rules & regulations they have around that. Site did have full hook up that worked fine and my kids enjoyed being near the river.

I picked this campground because it was very close to Blue Ridge Parkway. My plan was to ride my motorcycle through this beautiful area of NC, but the rain didn't cooperate this trip. I camped in site 112. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. This was a last minute reservation and they had limited availability. The site is not very level and very tight for my 32 foot RV. The site had full hookups (water, sewer, 30 amp electric) that worked great. I walked most of the campground and there are some great sites. Most are wooded and reasonably spaced. Quite a few long term campers, but the rigs and sites were all very well kept. At $64 per night it is a little pricey, for site 112, but probably not for the campground and area as a whole. No grill, just a tire rim for campfires and a picnic table.
Getting parked was a bit of a challenge to get things as level as possible and work around power stand and be able to get awning out to stay out of rain.
I would camp here again and recommend others give it a try. Lots to do in this part of the NC mountains.
GuideFamily-friendly campground with plenty of fun activities for kids. Playground, fishing pond, disc golf, recreation and game area, and ice cream trailer. Our site was nicely shaded and fairly level. Fire pit and picnic table at each site. There appears to be a lot of long-term residents but all sites were very well kept and the campground was very clean. The best part was the friendly staff!
GuideI think if I could, I would stay here forever. Sites are by the river! It’s gorgeous! Peaceful and quiet as well. The only downside for some of you would be the acceptable size of RV/motorhome. We have a 28’ TT, I believe that is about the limit. Reservations are made by phone, very affordable. Oh, did I forget to say it’s full hook ups? :)

Very nice campground... Went on Labor Day weekend 2019, mainly because nothing else was available. But, I was very pleased with the Wytheville KOA Holiday, from their full hook-up, easy access sites to their very nice pool with waterslide!

We were lucky enough to call just after a cancellation was made in the RV Park…making room for us for 4 nights. Tom was really communicative throughout and with the short notice of the reservation…he even helped with suggestions of nearby groceries in Galax and directions to the RV site. We arrived at 8 pm, and he greeted us with a smile and escorted us to our site. Full hook ups. Cable TV was a luxury for us! Great WiFi the entire time; even for a couple of zoom calls! In the morning we saw that most of the sites are parallel to the creek that runs through the site. And while the ones that are up a little further are off creek..they have either large decks or porch swings right on their site. But all are gravel, level and meticulously raked and cleaned upon arrival! No Campfires allowed; propane portable fire pit is ok. No Tents. Dogs supposed to be on a leash. Bath house is small and clean; one room for men and one for women. Each has a sink, toilet and walk in shower. (one person can use at a time, as there are no stalls.) Catch the head of the 58 mile trail just 2 blocks from the RV site. (Just head down to the River, just beyond the caboose with ice cream!) We rode the first 6 miles (and back) of the New River Trail to the train trestle and through the tunnel, just beyond. Easy ride with 2% grade. Kayak and bike drop offs are available at the gas station. (About 2 miles down.) Arrived back just in time fir a great fried catfish lunch at The Cafe; with indoor and outdoor seating…although outside benches do not have service. Late in the afternoon, there were some musicians staying next to us who were playing banjo and fiddle. We sat on the porch swing just across the creek and listened to the beautiful sounds. Overall great site! But that also means to book early!

GuideGreat State Park! Camp/RV does have full hook up spots, and larger rigs will fit, but very tight for big A’s. Road to park is very tight, windy and has low trees. Take your time and know you are on the right road, it won’t seem like it. Park is very clean, well run, with great shade. Hiking trails are excellent and lake is beautiful. We will definitely be back.

This full hookup section of the park looks like just an rv park at first glance, but once you pull in it is different. The sites are clean and spacious (except for the row of pull through sites in the middle, which have less space), the grass is green and soft, and everything is in excellent order. Our site was very large and well situated, though not shaded or private. The park staff were suoer friendly. All of the campers were nice, classy folks who seemed to have been here before. There were lots of kids riding around on bikes having fun. The creek was right next to our site, and the boys enjoyed playing in it. The trail around the lake leaves right from the campground at the dam, which is really pretty. It's a mile and a half to the beach, which has nice sand but not the clearest water. The trails and grounds are very nice and have some good history. There are lots of family activities and programs. Overall, a very nice place to camp.

This was our first time camping and it was great. The campground was very nice and well kept the camp host was awesome and helped me get our wildwood in the spot just right. It's a beautiful quiet campground, just what we needed on our maiden trip. The neighbors were very nice and helpful too. We can't wait to go back..! The full hook ups ended with all fees was $35 a night .

Large secluded campsites surrounded by rhododendron bushes with a mountain spring creek meandering through the campgrounds. Probably one of the most beautiful campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at especially when the rhododendrons are in Bloom. There are not any water or electric hook-ups. We used a small ultra quiet generator and filled up our RV water tank from a faucet located at a bathhouse. You will need a hose adapter (see pictures) to hook-up your water hose. There is a dumpster and dump station. Plenty of hiking trails and a small lake nearby.

KOA I-40/Crossville, TN - We stayed one night in October, full hook ups, 50 amp, good wifi until the evening but our cell service was good. $59.87 per night, $53.88 with KOA discount. Nicely maintained park with level concrete sites in the front with grass, fire rings and picnic tables that were in excellent condition. Friendly, welcoming staff with a nice gift shop/store. Hand dipped ice cream is available along with freshly made pizza and wings if you don’t want to cook. It does sit right next to Highway 70 into Crossville and can be noisy but it didn’t bother us. Each bathroom is a private toilet and shower, very clean, nicely tiled and plenty of hot water. Small laundry, two washers and two dryers but there may have been additional laundry towards the back of the park. The park seems to be broken down into three sections, concrete pad pull throughs in the front, then the office area, then a second section of sites with gravel pads and these are closest to the bathrooms, then further out is another area with a pond or small lake for catch and release fishing. Well manicured property. Would definitely stay again and the ice cream was really good.
RangerFries New River Trail RV Campground is just off the New River Trail in Fries, VA. I loved the whole campground - it’s small, less than 20 sites - but each site is beautifully landscaped and maintained. Our site was completely level and had a deck, perfect for a morning yoga routine. The sites were full hook-ups and the campground had really good Wi-Fi. We stayed for four nights, but I want to go back in the fall when the leaves are turning.
The New River runs through the town adding to the scenic-ness of the town. There is a restaurant and an ice cream shop, but the real attraction is the New River Bike Trail. The start of the trail is less than 1/2 mile from the campground and travels along the New River for miles. It is also possible to reach Galax by bike along a spur - about 11 miles from the campground.

This was a overnight stop but it was a great find! We were in a full hook up pull through site 20. Gravel pads with a picnic table and fire ring. Sites were open but a decent size, and mostly level. There was a lovely stream that ran along the property with beautiful shade trees and lots of grass. We have 2 dogs and there was plenty of great area to walk them. The bathhouse was very clean but there was no A/C and only a few small windows for ventilation. The whole property was very well kept and beautiful. Will definitely be back as we travel this way each year.
Verizon phone worked good, but not really any TV reception. But we were good with that!

Shes a little old school but if you give her the time and sit and talk with her youll know her intent. Been here a week and happy so far. The price is 600 a month, full hook up, the water is clean, cell service is 1-2 bars for att phone, enough to run my hotspot and stream movies and facetime, location is just outside yuppyville and close to everything. Id say give it a shot to someone looking

Great park to hike and although most of the RV spots are not very level there are a few good ones. 30amp, no sewer hookups, dump station, shared water spigots. Very shady and during the week very quiet. Best suited for smaller RVs but there are a couple of spots for larger ones.
TravelerWe stopped here on our way to Florida, extremely convenient to the 81/77 junction. The star of this show is the scenery - absolutely gorgeous, and their seriously out-of-date website doesn't do it justice. Surrounded on three sides by open fields full of cows and sheep, and awesome mountain views, this place couldn't have been any more peaceful. There's a pool but it was closed, and when I asked why the person working said, "no idea." That was the answer to a couple of questions - the person on wasn't the friendliest. We had to stay an extra night because of mechanical trouble, but we did laundry, walked around, just relaxed and watched the cows. Small store, ice and propane available. Full hook-ups. Some shade trees, close spaces but not packed too tightly overall. Lovely spot. Lost one star because the staff was meh.

We discovered this park summer of 2018 and went back 4 times. This park is geographically in the middle of no where and squeezed in between two states (hence interstate park). Even though it’s in God’s country it’s worth the drive. It’s a quaint park with amazing and friendly staff who pride their jobs and park. It had full hookups for RVs and decent campsite for tents. Bathhouses are clean, the campground is quite and restaurant is clean. There is a small water park for families, nice trails, play grounds, shelters, basketball court, small lake and access to some of the best views in Appalachia. This truly is a hidden gem if you can get past the road to get there. But on a side note for that- they are building a new road to access the park and hopefully it’ll be done soon.

Legend-CAMPGROUND REVIEW- I was pleasantly surprised when we pulled into this campground. It accomadates to all, without being too showy. There are cabins you can rent and full RV hookup sites as well if that’s what you’re interested in. I was particularly interested in the primitive tent site. This is only a 45 second walk from the provided parking area- and well worth it for the privacy and seclusion. There is one bathroom in the campground- one men’s shower and one woman’s shower. I wouldn’t say it was stellar in cleanliness- but it wasn’t disgusting by any means either. For the tent and primitive sites there are two portable bathrooms- one was better than the other. The guy who runs it is super nice and accommodating- even letting us have a fire with our family in one of the easier to get to camp sitesp so that my grandparents could enjoy a nice campfire.
The campsites were as a whole pretty close together- we went midweek and before their peak season so there wasn’t really anyone else around, but could see it being less than desirable to stay here in the on season. It gets pretty busy in the on season. Would highly recommend the primitive tentsite or site 17 for optimal privacy (especially in the on season.)
-GEAR REVIEW- Being a Ranger for the Dyrt, I get to test out some killer equipment from the best guys out there. This time was no exception. The Renogy Water Filturation system is probably not something I would have ever thought I needed. I’m one of those people who carelessly drinks out of any body of water as long as it seems to be moving fast enough. While I’ve never had any problems in the past- it’s always a stress in the back of my mind. What if I have some kind of parasite living inside me just waiting to come out and kill me? What if on my backpacking trip I drink stream water and end up pooping myself because of contracting giardia? Real worries.
Renogy has changed all this though- because now- I know I’m only getting purified water. This filter easy to use and put together, very minimalistic, and light as a feather. It for sure will simplify my backpacking trips from now on (I usually pack two or three gallons- which as you can imagine gets pretty heavy.) It comes with the purification system, two tubes, a suringe for cleaning out the filter and a few replacement parts. It all fits in its little pouch.

LegendThis was our first visit to a Virginia State Park and we were impressed. The campground was really nice as our site was very long, had a huge patio, was level, and water and electric were well-placed. Our site (#43) was on the end of a row with our patio facing a hillside next to a stream that made for a very pleasant rushing water sound. The weather was great for the first few days of our visit so we made the most of being outside and exploring the park. We went for a few hikes which offered great views of the surrounding mountains, gave Spirit plenty of time to swim in the lake, and I paddle boarded around the lake.
The park itself is over 3,334 acres and packed with recreational opportunities with the centerpiece being Hungry Mother Lake. There is a swim beach, boat launch, hiking trails, restaurant, boat rentals, fishing piers, convention center, nature center, and plenty of camping. The campgrounds are divided into three sections– Creekside, Burston and Royal Oak. All campsites in the Creekside section are reservable while only some in other sections are reservable. The Burston Campground has the largest sites and offers some full hook-up sites and water and electric sites (50 amp) with pull thrus and back-ins. Sites are level and can fit big rigs but the only problem we had were that some of the trees need to be trimmed back and scratched the upper sides of our coach. The Royal Oak section is for tents only (no hookups are provided) and has really cool wooden pads that give you the feeling of hanging over the hillside.
The restrooms and shower house were very new and really clean. Each shower is in an individual room which makes for nice privacy. There is a laundry with two washers and two dryers costing $1.50/load. Also located here is a dish washing station with two big deep sinks and hot and cold water. There is free wifi at your site that worked fairly well and we were able to get about six over the air antenna television stations (albeit none were from major networks).
LegendI was traveling in this area and was really excited to have found that there is a town called Austinville where Stephen F Austin, a founder of Texas, originated. While driving out to the monument in his honor I found this site and loved what I saw!
Highway access to this area is easy for all types of traveler. there are several stores in the area with just about anything you could need or want only moments away from camp and if you are there in late summer when I was, the sun rises are amazing!!!!
So what is the catch?? Well they don't accept tents!!! NOOOOOO!! I didn't find a single thing about that online when I checked their site following finding out this knowledge, however I did like this site enough to still give them a positive review because they were so nice, their facility was ample and their proximity itself.
In fact, they were so nice they gave me a tour of the campground even though I couldn't stay and gave me some great info about places around me which led me to another campground that served me perfect, a tent campground nearby.
This site has a very nice restroom with multiple sinks, a large laundry room perfect for a camper who is on the road for a while like myself. I noticed there was a very nice pool which is heated, allowing it to be open much longer than many campgrounds in the area. There is a large pet area and also playground and several hiking areas in the direct area which all looked nice.
Nearby are numerous state parks as a part of the New River Trail including the Shot Tower Historical Site which is a very short distance away. In addition, people often come here to watch the birds and deer, which are very relaxing.
Should I return with an RV I also inquired about the rates which are reasonable at $35 for standard hook ups and they do have weekly rates also. I did notice what appeared to be a few long term campers but their areas still looked kept and maintained.
TIPS:
GuideWe did an overnight stopover at the Wytheville KOA on our travels south and were very impressed with the campground. Easy exit off Rt 81, with several truck stops/gas stations at the exit to fill up. The roads are a bit hilly going into the campground, but we didn’t experience any issues.
Check-in was easy and the employees were very friendly. The grounds of the campground were well maintained and the sites were very level. It appeared that all the sites were pull through with the majority having cement patios, all of which made an overnight stop easy. Even though the sites were close together(not as close as most KOAs), they are situated so it doesn’t feel like you are on top of your neighbor.
The campground offered many amenities, but since our stay was a quick layover we did not have a chance to take advantage of them. While the sites were very nice, the highlight of this KOA is the internet! Out of all the campgrounds/RV parks we have travel to over the last few years, Wytheville had THE BEST wifi/internet we have experienced!
I would definitely include this KOA as a future stop on our travels.
