Fries New RiverTrail RV Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Biking and paddling draw most visitors to Fries New River Trail RV Park, a small private campground in Fries, Virginia, where the New River Trail trailhead sits roughly two blocks away. The trail runs nearly 57 miles along the New River, and campers can ride directly from their sites to the access point. Kayak and bike rentals are available nearby, and fishing is accessible within walking distance of the campground. Fries Trail Hopper RV Sites and Rivers Rest Campsites are also in the area for those who want to compare options before booking.

The campground holds fewer than 20 sites, all gravel and pull-through, with most running parallel to a creek that flows below. Sites include full hookups with cable TV and WiFi that multiple reviewers confirmed works reliably across the property, including rear sites. No campfires are permitted, though propane portable fire pits are allowed. Most sites get shade for a large portion of the day. Water pressure can run low at sites toward the back of the park.

The bathhouse is small. One room serves each gender, with a single sink, toilet, and walk-in shower per side. A washer and dryer are also on-site. The campground does not accept credit cards, so cash is worth having on hand. "Bath house is small and clean; one room for men and one for women," notes Jennifer K., summing up what most reviewers echo. Access roads are winding and narrow in spots, so slower speeds are advisable on the approach. Campers who book early tend to have the most site choices.

Tom, the owner is first class as is his campground. Impeccable gravel sites, bathroom and common areas. Sites are close to level. Nothing severe at all. All sited are full hookups. A single washer and dryer available onsite. Great wifi and cable hookups. 2 blocks from New River Rails to Trails. Beautiful biking/hiking trail. Kayaking, fishing w blocks as well. We loves it so much we stayed 2 more days. Pro note: go to Creek Bottom Brewery in Galax (less than 30 min). Great food and beer options. Pickle fries are amazing! You'll thank me later

Absolutely Stellar Campground!

Fries New River Trail RV Campground is just off the New River Trail in Fries, VA. I loved the whole campground - it’s small, less than 20 sites - but each site is beautifully landscaped and maintained. Our site was completely level and had a deck, perfect for a morning yoga routine. The sites were full hook-ups and the campground had really good Wi-Fi. We stayed for four nights, but I want to go back in the fall when the leaves are turning.

The New River runs through the town adding to the scenic-ness of the town. There is a restaurant and an ice cream shop, but the real attraction is the New River Bike Trail. The start of the trail is less than 1/2 mile from the campground and travels along the New River for miles. It is also possible to reach Galax by bike along a spur - about 11 miles from the campground.

Wonderful stay at Fries!

Lots to do in Fries!

We were lucky enough to call just after a cancellation was made in the RV Park…making room for us for 4 nights. Tom was really communicative throughout and with the short notice of the reservation…he even helped with suggestions of nearby groceries in Galax and directions to the RV site. We arrived at 8 pm, and he greeted us with a smile and escorted us to our site. Full hook ups. Cable TV was a luxury for us! Great WiFi the entire time; even for a couple of zoom calls! In the morning we saw that most of the sites are parallel to the creek that runs through the site. And while the ones that are up a little further are off creek..they have either large decks or porch swings right on their site. But all are gravel, level and meticulously raked and cleaned upon arrival! No Campfires allowed; propane portable fire pit is ok. No Tents. Dogs supposed to be on a leash. Bath house is small and clean; one room for men and one for women. Each has a sink, toilet and walk in shower. (one person can use at a time, as there are no stalls.) Catch the head of the 58 mile trail just 2 blocks from the RV site. (Just head down to the River, just beyond the caboose with ice cream!) We rode the first 6 miles (and back) of the New River Trail to the train trestle and through the tunnel, just beyond. Easy ride with 2% grade. Kayak and bike drop offs are available at the gas station. (About 2 miles down.) Arrived back just in time fir a great fried catfish lunch at The Cafe; with indoor and outdoor seating…although outside benches do not have service. Late in the afternoon, there were some musicians staying next to us who were playing banjo and fiddle. We sat on the porch swing just across the creek and listened to the beautiful sounds. Overall great site! But that also means to book early!

Peaceful and Beautiful Get Away

We loved this place and the owner, Tom was wonderful to work with. We had a great campsite with plenty of room in the back of the campground. Even though we were in the back, the wifi worked great the entire time. Being at the end of the water line for the park, our pressure wasn’t great so we used our fresh water tank and water pump for showers and to wash dishes but the pressure was adequate for making coffee, brushing our teeth and filling the water bowls for the dogs. The campground is close to the New River Trail so we walked and biked the trail every day. It was a beautiful area. There’s a little ice cream shop and a diner close by. One thing to note is that they don’t accept credit cards.

We Love This Little Campground

This is a campground located in a tiny valley between two small hills/mountainsides. Tom, the proprietor, is friendly and efficient in guiding the guests to their site. We camped here in mid Sept 2020 and had a great time. We were in site 8. The bathhouse is small, but clean. The stream runs below the campsites. Each site is a pull-thru and is in the form of a crescent, so everyone’s door faces the stream. They can handle the smaller TT to the largest monster-sized motor homes.

New River Trail is one block from campground. You can ride bikes from your campsite to the trail. The trail is almost 57 miles in length and we rode 15 miles out and 15 back to campsite.

UPDATE 11/6 THRU 11/8

We stayed in campsite #7, closest one to bath house.

UPDATE 11/12 THRU 11/15

We stayed in a newer campsite in the rear of the campground. IT WAS AWESOME! It was site #17, up on a slight hill and it had a really nice deck.(WiFi and cable are great in the entire park).

Quaint, Lovely! Check out a Jam Session!

Small, sites right near a babbling brook, and very quaint. We followed the directions provided by Tom, the owner, to a “T”. The roads were windy and a tad narrow but definitely do-able as long as you took your time. One of the main attractions of the park is the close proximity of the New River Trail. We were one block from where we could get on the trail! Talk about convenient!! Fries is a very small town. I believe that the last census taken showed it had about 400 year round residents! But, the town is on the “Crooked River Music Trail” and music is an important part of the their heritage. Thursday evenings, the community center hosts a jam session - check it out!!
