Basic AT shelter with lots of tent camping and swimming hole nearby

Note: This is a hike in back country shelter with unreliable water and a pit bathroom.

I tented here on a section hike of the AT. The shelter was a fairly basic 8ish person shelter, but this stop stood out because of a brand new privvy, large tenting areas, and a swimming hole and consistent water just a bit further down the trail (when heading northbound).

For camping, there were a few large tent areas where multiple tents could fit and which looked quite level.

The privvy looked brand new and was more spacious than most on the trail.

There was no water on the shelter, but there was plenty of water at Stony Brook / Mink Brook a bit further northbound. I only explored a bit offtrail down the brook but found a decent swimming hole (could just barely submerge myself) to clean off a bit.

There was also a bear box here, which I hadn't seen at other shelters along the AT in Vermont (heading southbound).

Although the shelter was fairly basic, I would keep this on my list as a go-to place to stop if I was planning to hike in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Stony Brook Shelter located on the Appalachian Trail?

Stony Brook Shelter is located along the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. This backcountry shelter is situated near a swimming hole with Stony Brook providing water access, though water availability can be unreliable depending on seasonal conditions. It's a hike-in shelter that serves as a rest point for AT thru-hikers and section hikers. The shelter is accessible only by hiking the trail, with no road access, making it a true backcountry experience for those traversing this section of the AT in Vermont.

What amenities are available at Jeffers Brook Shelter?

While this question asks about Jeffers Brook Shelter rather than Stony Brook Shelter, it's worth noting that most AT shelters in Vermont offer similar basic amenities. Typical AT shelters provide a three-sided structure with a roof, sleeping platform, and nearby water source. Many have a designated privy (pit toilet), established tent sites, and sometimes a fire ring with seating. For current and specific information about Jeffers Brook Shelter, contact the Green Mountain Club or Appalachian Trail Conservancy, as amenities at backcountry shelters may change seasonally.

When is the best time to stay at Appalachian Trail shelters?

The best time to stay at Appalachian Trail shelters in Vermont, including Stony Brook Shelter, is late spring through early fall (May to October). Summer offers the most comfortable weather, though shelters can be crowded with thru-hikers during this peak season. Early fall provides beautiful foliage with fewer crowds. Avoid spring mud season (April to mid-May) when trails become extremely muddy and difficult. Winter stays require specialized cold-weather gear and experience. Always check current trail conditions before planning your hike, regardless of season.
