Free camping in Cache National Forest, Dock Flat sits above Mantua on a dirt road that requires some caution before arrival. The gate at the entrance stays closed until Memorial Day weekend, so spring visits before that date will be turned away. The road into the campground is winding and can be rough in spots. RVs and trailers longer than 30 feet will have difficulty navigating the bends, and reviewers suggest larger rigs stick to the lower sections while tent campers have more flexibility to push further up.
The campground has at least 30 established sites, each with a fire pit, and the tree cover provides consistent shade across much of the area. No water sources are on-site, so campers need to bring everything they drink or cook with. Cell coverage is available for both T-Mobile and Verizon users. The surrounding terrain gives access to hiking and biking trails, and ATVs are active in the area, particularly on weekends when the campground can get busy.
John Rushton A. notes having "a great view of the stars" from his site, and the open sightlines at elevation make the campground well-suited to night sky watching. Shooting is permitted in the area, and late-night noise from other campers has been mentioned in reviews. Nearby, Willard Mountain Road Dispersed, Cache NF and Box Elder Campground provide additional options if Dock Flat fills up. Arrive with a full water supply and plan to be self-sufficient for the duration of your stay.
