Private property

You need permission to hike in. When we showed up, there were turkey hunters already up there. I would do much more research than we did before going to make sure it’s open

Big lake is the best lake

I hesitate to write a review because of how special this place is. Big lake and deep lake are so much fun. Camping here is my all time favorite. Fish, salamanders, cougars, and plenty of elk all over make it a wonderful place to camp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What attractions are near Big Lake for campers visiting from Richfield, Utah?

Big Lake itself offers excellent fishing opportunities and wildlife viewing, with elk frequently spotted in the area. Deep Lake, adjacent to Big Lake, provides additional water recreation. The surrounding area is known for its abundant wildlife including salamanders and occasional cougar sightings. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking through the Fishlake National Forest, hunting (in season with proper permits), and exploring Monroe Mountain. The natural setting is perfect for photography and stargazing. Richfield, serving as a gateway town, offers supplies and amenities before heading into this more remote wilderness area.

What are the rules for dispersed camping at Big Lake, Utah?

Dispersed camping at Big Lake requires obtaining permission before accessing the area. The land may have restricted access during certain hunting seasons, particularly turkey hunting periods. Always check with local forest service or BLM offices for current regulations before planning your trip. During your stay, follow standard dispersed camping principles: pack out all trash, maintain appropriate distance from water sources, and practice Leave No Trace ethics. Since this is a special area with abundant wildlife, take extra care to secure food and minimize your impact on the natural environment.

Where exactly is Big Lake located in Utah?

Big Lake is located in south-central Utah, situated near Monroe Mountain in the Fishlake National Forest area. It's paired with nearby Deep Lake, forming a scenic wilderness area. For precise directions, contact the Richfield Ranger District of the Fishlake National Forest, as access points may vary depending on seasonal conditions.
