Lake Trammell Park

Lake Trammell Park operates as dispersed camping on city property outside Colorado City, where campers pull off the road to set up without designated sites. The lake itself has been dry for an extended period, leaving an empty lakebed that some visitors find unsettling. Two dumpsters mark the entrances, though scattered trash still appears around the area.

Campers park along the farm-to-market road or near the empty lakebed, with RVs up to 30 feet accommodated on the uneven ground. Cell service proves spotty, particularly for Verizon users, though the area does provide access for those needing an overnight stop. The location attracts both planned visitors and travelers seeking last-minute camping when other options fill up.

Vehicle traffic occurs throughout the day and sometimes late into the evening, as locals use the area for various activities including attempting to retrieve stuck vehicles from the dried lakebed. Kevin C. notes "However, there also NO WATER IN THE LAKE" and describes the park as "completely abandoned" during his December visit.

The area works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions and minimal oversight. Those requiring reliable cell service or established camping infrastructure may find better options among camping spots around Colorado City.

Visitors often highlighted the spacious, quiet setting with beautiful stargazing opportunities. Several guests observed the lake was dry and facilities appeared abandoned, with occasional safety concerns from local activity.

Quiet and remote

I’m staying two nights here while I wait for a prescription to be filled in Sweetwater. It’s quiet but kind of creepy with the empty lake. As of this writing there are two dumpsters. One at each entrance. Yet there is still some garbage around. Why, people? lol. My cell service is not great. I have Verizon. I would have given it a higher score if I had cell reception. Lucky for me I have a Starlink.

Nice place to park for the night.

The lake is dry. Someone must have drank it all, and the parking spot is uneven. But other than that, it's just a place to park for the night.

Did not feel safe

Seeing the most recent review (on another pin but same park name) we knew the area was abandoned/seemed a little odd or questionable but without many options in this area we decided to try it. With no obvious spots to park we just pulled off the road (no other options) and set up for 2 nights- a break for a long stretch of road.. within an hour two teenagers came up asking for a tow cause they got their truck stuck in the dried out lake. After that until about 12 am there were trucks in and out trying to help them. Then at 5:30 am a huge white pick up truck pulled up blasting music and circled our two campers multiple times. And I mean circled getting within 5 feet of our campers/vehicles. We stayed in the campers and after about 30 minutes they left but we immediately packed up and left.

Best wintertime Campsite

Arrived here in mid-December and the park was completely abandoned. We camped near the farm to market road and almost everyon3 completely ignored us.

There were no signs about camping but one big sign that said, No Wake Lake No Swimming. No Hunting, No Firearms. However, there also NO WATER IN THE LAKE. It appears the city has not promulgated camping regulations, at least there are no signs regarding camping in the off season.

Great spot to nap

My husband and I are on a very long road trip. Last night around 3:30 am we were getting extremely tired and needed to make a stop for some sleep. All of the rest areas were completely full, the normal camp sites were not able to be booked and so we pulled up the Dyrt for a last minute free spot. The area was not hard to find, the stars are breathtaking, it was nice and very quite. I didn’t see much trash at all ether! It is simply a great place to stop for the night. We woke up to a very nice sun rise of wind turbines and a lake with duckies! Simply amazing.
