Honey Flat Camping Area — Caprock Canyons State Park

This campground has electric and water hookups but no sewer, although it does have a pump out station, and dumpsters. Clean bathrooms and showers with lots of hot water. It is right next to a prairie dog town, and these guinea pigs with tails are extraordinarily cute. Bison can walk right through the campground, so don't be caught unaware. Almost all the sites are nicely separated. Lots of bushes and small trees to provide shade and privacy. Picnic tables are sheltered, asphalt parking, fire ring and grill at each site. Access great trails directly from your campsite. T-Mobile coverage was okay.

Prairie dogs town, bison walking around, gorgeous canyon views! The sites are so nicely set up with plantings obscuring your neighbor and a nice covered picnic table with shade/ privacy slats on one side. Clean up to date bathroom and showers, hiking trails and a little patch to canyon views right from this site! Wildflowers in bloom including cactus! Our first red rock canyon and We loved it!

Really enjoyed seeing this picturesque place in Texas. It was an absolute joy watching the momma Bison repeatedly corral her playful young as we were leaving.

Will definitely come back here with the family!!

Clean, quiet, cozy. Stayed 5 nights. You can hear owls and coyotes at night. A great hiking/mountain biking park. Buffaloes are easy to find in the park. There is a prairie dog town close to the camping area. I have knee trouble, and my wife uses a power chair. We still loved our stay.

We were able to find an opening for 1 night at the honey flat campground, and enjoyed the solitude, scenery and wild life. Had 30 Amp hookup with water. Dumpstation and bath facilities. The sites were good size with fire rings and shaded picnic tables. Need to be aware of texas wild life. Many hiking trails and staff at the information center were nice and helpful. Need to plan trip far in advance as sites fill up quick if you plan on staying for awhile.

Recommend reservations if you want a electric hookup! Sites are are spaced so you can hardly see neighbors. Buffalo walk right thru the camping sites.

I think that Caprock Canyons State Park is underrated, which is great for the people who visit. We'll definitely be back. 

The campground is well maintained and easy to navigate. The views aren't as spectacular as they are at campgrounds in Palo Duro Canyon but BISON COME TO VISIT. Of course, to stay safe this often requires an exercise of patience. We were caught behind a heard of 12 or so on a hiking trail and maintaining a safe distance required a very leisurely pace, with lots of time to just take in the landscape. And we had to stand around and wait for another group to graze their way past our trailer on another occasion. But it was easy to keep our distance and they don't stay in one place long, so you just have to give them a few minutes. It was really neat to see these creatures roaming free--I thought it was a lot more exciting than seeing the herds in Yellowstone because there aren't the crowds of tourists.

We’ve stayed at Honey Flats a couple of times over the past year and it’s worth a stop if you’re in the area and have never been. The Buffalo herd and prairie dog town are big hits with the kids and there’s good hiking trails in the canyon. Cell service is basically non-existent for both Verizon and AT&T. Honey Flats is a basic state park campground with power and water and pretty decent spacing between sites. If you visit in late Spring, the weather in this part of the state can get dicey in a hurry, we experienced several hail storms and wild thunderstorms in the few days we’ve spent at the park in the month of May.

This is another fun close place for us on Weekends. This park has a huge buffalo herd that roams the park year round. Lots of other wild life & the trails are well maintained. Limit RV hookups but are well maintained & clean. Staff is very nice & helpful.

This is a beautiful, undervalued State Park In Texas. I spent only one night here on my way to another TX State Park. It was fantastic!! This park has great facilities, spacious campsites and talk about animals. Bison & Prarie Dogs are the tow most popular animals at the park. Very unique to any park that I have visited in TX. The canyon views are spectacular as is the hiking in the park. I'm a photographer and got some beautiful Sunset and Sunrise photos. The park personnel were great and very helpful in pointing out some of he best photo opportunities in the park.

Facilities and surrounding area were real nice. Just a one nighter but took the dog on a long hike.

What a neat place!! The staff is great! The Rangers are friendly and helpful! The sites are pretty darn level and well spaced apart.(there might be an occasional Bison dropping in the way, but hey, I can deal with that!!) It is very clean and well maintained. It is well out of town, very peaceful. Night time, with no moon, star gazing and satellite tracking is terrific! Come see it for yourself and have fun!

Woke to bison wandering through our campsite. It was really amazing site.

Highs include beautiful views, great wildlife, shelters over the tables, big sites, and quiet environment. Lows include heavy wind, heat, and mainly no water due to a boil water notice that meant no showers and overall safety concern.

My family stayed in the Caprock Canyon state park Honey Flats loop. Stunning views of the canyon are within a short walk from the campground. The paved pad at our site was level, and there was also a sheltered picnic table at the site. All sites were very spacious and felt private. A herd of bison along with their calves wandered through our campsite in the morning. We also spotted tons of prairie dogs, a coyote, a road runner, and rabbits. The playground was just okay, and the showers were unavailable when we visited due to plumbing problems, but the hiking and mountain biking trails along with the wildlife made it one of the best campgrounds we’ve stayed at.

Spent 3 days here. Loved every minute of it. Beautiful landscape.

This is a really great campground. I would have given it 5 stars but the dump station is out of order and has been for a long time. The sites are very spacious. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The trails are well kept and plentiful for walking, bikes, horses. The lake is nice as well. And don’t forget the bison freely wandering through the campground. And the canyon views are so beautiful

Caprock is a smaller version of palo duro canyon, and very close, without all the “commercial” fanfare. We tent camped here in august, 2018 and had the entire tent campsite lakeside to ourselves. The bathrooms were great, clean, hot water, all good things. The hikes were nice, challenging only due to heat (it was August in Texas so to be expected). There is a nice pier overlooking the lake, we were able to set up our chairs and enjoy a beautiful peaceful evening. The staff was very helpful. This is a Bison ranch, but we didnt see any during our two night stay.

A hidden gem, this park was a real treat! Stop by the visitor's center, there you will pay your entrance fee/camping fees and pick up a map.

Caprock State Park has a sandwich shop, playground, camp sites, bathrooms, look out points and lots of trailheads. Each campsite has a fire pit and plenty of space to spread out and make yourself at home. This is a wonderful place for hiking, camping, primitive camping, r.v. stays, landscape and wildlife photography.  Bring water, it does get very hot during the day!

We took the Upper Canyon Trail to Fern Cave and then made our way back on the Canyon Loop Trail. It was a perfect day hike with lots of beautiful views. While the map labels portions of it as extremely rugged and steep, none of it requires technical experience and it is all very well marked. Fern Cave took a little bit of intuitive navigating to get to, as its off the beaten path, but it’s well worth it. I’m an experienced hiker and had a blast.

great place to hike, lots of bison and prairie dogs to see and great view while hiking. just be careful on the hikes some rocks are unstable and narrow walk ways.

Caprock Canyons provides an excellent opportunity to see Bison wandering about pretty freely! There are also plenty of prairie dogs to keep you amused. I love the way each campsite is shielded from the others by space and natural trees and scrub.

We only stayed one night, but we are so glad we did! Beautiful canyons, many opportunities to climb, bike and swim.

We loved this place! Great sites, nice bathrooms, gorgeous park! A real gem in West Texas.

Caprock Canyon is definitely off the beaten path but a wonderful place to get away.

The park is large but there is only one camping loop for RVs. The facilities are older but the park staff does a good job maintaining the sites. Water and electric but no sewer available.

The park has challenging mountain biking and hiking. The only negative is most of the trails are not easily accessible from the Honey Flat campground (without a long walk) so having a car to navigate the large park is helpful.

Lake Theo is a nice bonus for swimming or kayaking/canoeing in the hot summer.

The bison are the stars of the park. You'll see them on your way in and probably visiting Honey Flat in the evening.

One of our favorite things to do is walk to the vista near the Honey Flat campground at sunset and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

Make sure to bring what you need to the park. There is not much in Quitaque so bring your supplies.
