Within Caprock Canyons State Park, Wild Horse Equestrian Area serves equestrian campers with 15 sites designed around horse corrals and water access. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages this fenced campground specifically for riders, though visitors without horses can also stay here. Each site includes horse pens, picnic tables, fire rings, and water hookups, with sites spread across asphalt parking areas.
The campground operates behind a gate that campers must open and close to separate horses from the park's free-roaming bison herd. Shari G. notes "the campground has a gate to keep wildlife out and horses in." Sites offer minimal shade from scattered mesquite trees, and a windmill in the area can create noise during windy conditions. Campers report frequent wildlife encounters, including bison wandering through the area and coyotes active at night.
The equestrian area provides direct access to miles of horse trails that extend through three counties, plus hiking options for non-riders. Lake Theo offers swimming and fishing opportunities within the park. Vidalia S. observes that "sites are well spaced, and lots of scrubby trees provide some shade and privacy." The campground lacks restrooms, requiring trips to shower facilities at Honey Flat Camping Area about 1.4 miles away.
Water is available at the campground but not at every individual site. Cellular coverage proves spotty, particularly for T-Mobile and Verizon users. The town of Quitaque sits five miles from the park entrance with basic supplies, while Plainview offers full grocery and restaurant options 55 miles away. Summer temperatures can reach extreme levels with little natural cooling.
Wild Horse Equestrian Area works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive facilities and wildlife encounters, particularly those bringing horses to explore the extensive trail system.
