Rough Ridge Campground

Cherokee National Forest encompasses Rough Ridge Campground, a primitive US Forest Service site that prohibits pets and operates without reservations. The campground provides basic amenities including fire rings but lacks water access, requiring campers to bring their own supply or treat water from nearby sources.

Located along a river that provides natural sound throughout the night, the site serves as a launching point for the popular Tanawaha Trail leading to Rough Ridge summit. Bear activity occurs in the area, making proper food storage in vehicles or bear canisters essential. Several other primitive campgrounds near Cherokee National Forest operate nearby as backup options when this small site reaches capacity.

Riverside primitive camping in Blue Ridge

Rough Ridge the mountain/trail is amazing. The nearby campground is a small primitive (extremely basic) site, no water, nice fire ring. FYI no reservations, but there are a few other primitive campgrounds nearby in case this is full. Make sure you have a bear canister and/or leave food in your car.

Yay: Absolutely beautiful site, we were lulled to sleep by the river!

Nay: No complaints.

Surprise: You absolutely need to hike the Tanawaha Trail and the Rough Ridge summit!! Ideally in fall :)
