The park encompasses approximately 125,000 acres of both rocky gorges and forested plateaus. Numerous pristine streams unite with the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Over thousands of years, this ceaselessly moving water has carved the sandstone of the plateau into impressive cliffs, arches and chimneys that are found throughout the park.
Just a few miles from the campground is Blue Heron Mine, also known as Mine 18, a historic abandoned mining town that has been rebuilt as an outdoor museum. Visitors can hear audio presentations from actual people who lived in the community in the 1950s. The Big South Fork Scenic Railway Depot is located about 9 miles away in the town of Stearns, which offers train rides and other educational opportunities for campers. Lake Cumberland is the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi River. Its large surface acreage and over 1,200 miles of shoreline provide a myriad of recreational activities. Kendall Campground offers visitors convenient access to a cold water trout stream, making it a popular fishing destination. The stream is well-stocked with rainbow, brook and brown trout. Whispering Pines Trail, located within the campground, is a non-strenuous trail approximately half a mile long.
The campground overlooks the river, offering sweeping scenic views. Dense stands of mature hardwoods forest the site, offering scenic views, pleasant shade and wildlife habitat. Because of the temperate climate and relatively long recreation season, the lake provides varied outdoor recreational opportunities for millions of visitors each year.
Wolf Creek Dam National Fish Hatchery is within walking distance of the campground. It is open year-round and offers free tours to the public and an excellent Environmental Education Center. The campground has all of the glamping necessities. Water hook-up, electrical, dumping station, clean hot water showers, etc. It's pet friendly and the campground is very clean. The location is excellent for those who love rock climbing (sport and trad), easy and moderate level hiking, white water kayaking, or maybe want to spend a day or two also doing some backcountry camping. There are bears and other curious wildlife so make sure to keep your stuff in the provided bear boxes!

LegendWe camped here over the weekend with our dogs. The campground is actually not in Tennessee. It's located on the Kentucky side of Big South Fork. The campsites have a picnic table and a firepit. Our campsite was very nice and private with a big grassy area. The bathhouse was nice and clean. There are hiking trails nearby and access to a small mining village. We would definitely camp here again.

Stayed in the developed camp area. (There is a primitive tent area along a creek branch and there are some primitive hike-in areas) Tennessee seems to have a thing for larger rock pieces in their gravel on tent platforms... otherwise no complaints. Fire ring, grill and table. Plenty of shade and trees to hang the hammock. Bathhouse was clean. 2 nice showers. Lovely hot water. One trail head at the camp area. Beautiful trails. Would definitely come back.

There’s only 20 spots, and they all seem to be shady and have trees between neighbors. There’s a free book swap hut, like those mailboxes, but a whole building worth of take-one/leave-one books. There showers and bathroom are unusually clean for a campground. There’s a place to wash dishes.
There’s a great playground and creek at the bottom of the hill. Easy walking distance, but not so close that you have to hear screaming kids.
The park has a lovely waterfall hike that we did and many others that we didn’t make it to.

I seek off the beaten path places, and this campground is a gem. Located in a quiet forest near the small mountain town of Monterey, Belle Ridge is a wonderful destination stop when touring the Upper Cumberland regions of Tennessee. Within ten minutes of Monterey, this mountain town has two wonderful coffee places, an amazing Amish bakery, nice specialty stores in the historic downtown, good restaurants and a wonderful museum. There was a lot to do at the campground, but also many interesting sights within a 30-minute drive.
GuideFrozen Head is a wonderful place. For starters, the ranger that was on duty at the Visitor's Center was so helpful and kind. The campground is in close proximity to many of the trailheads. There is a nice bathhouse, but all the sites are rustic (non electric). There are also many well kept backcountry sites with fire pits if you are backpacking. The surroundings are gorgeous: the foothills of the Appalachians and the hiking is superb and challenging. If you are able, make sure to hike to the Lookout Tower! This is a great park and campground if you want to experience the beauty of East Tennessee without the crowds of the Smoky Mountains.
LegendBig South Fork NRRA is definitely one of my favorite places in Tennessee. It stretches into Kentucky’s too. So much to do and see, and the hiking and camping is equal to the Smokies in my opinion, except there’s no crowds, no traffic, not many people! It’s great! There’s a few campgrounds in BSF, like Bandy Creek and Station Camp,and they are excellent spots, but the backcountry is where it’s at n the BSF! I have found so many excellent camp sites along the river and in the forest, and I’ve always been able to find one with plenty of privacy on any given weekend. There’s lots of hiking, 4-wheeling, fishing, swimming, mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking, rock climbing, etc here. The possibilities are endless! The sounds at night are so peaceful and relaxing, and the lightning bugs put on quite a show in the summer! I tried to make a video, I don’t think you can see them, but you can hear the woods at night!

I try to participate in the Yamacraw Trail Run every year because it is just AWESOME, and this area is part of their route due to the excellent scenery of the area.
If you like trees, hills, streams, falls, historical markers, old cabins and history , plus not much use of modern technology when you camp then you will thoroughly enjoy Big South Bend! If you are a bring the kitchen sink kinda camper you might wanna find a nearby KOA or other type campground.
The campground has no signal, no electricity, no showers, no host. Just you, a tent pad, picnic table and fire ring. Oh, and there is one pit toilet. Bring 5$ cash for the honor pay station and your hiking shoes and watercraft. There is a Trailhead at the back of the 6 site campground and a boat ramp down the hill.
The sites are well maintained and old , probably CCC built with wood steps leading up or down to your site. There is no direct access to the boatramp but there is a short trail that connects the sites to the boatramp that runs along the cliff face down to the ramp.
The trailhead is part of the Sheltowee Trace Trail and connects to the Yamacraw Bridge. You could easily stage a multi day backpacking trip from Alum Ford to take in the local sights.
Not far up the road is the Yahoo Picnic Area. I think it used to be a campground just by the way it’s set up. Picnic tables on pads and a nice old pavilion for groups with a grill. Past that Yahoo Falls. This is a technical, moderate trail down to the tallest falls in Kentucky. Also a very old area but maintained with newer restroom facilities. The loop trail was approximately 1.5 miles long with a metal staircase on one side and trail on the far side. This is also part of a thru trail. Get you an old fashion paper map before coming cause your fancy electronic gear may or may not work here.
This is one of many areas through the Kentucky/Tennessee Big South Fork if you are able plan for an extended stay to check the whole place out;)

Cumberland Mountain has a total of 145 campsites, spread across 5 loops, plus a backcountry site on an 8 mile backpacking trail.
We have not stayed overnight here as we are tent-campers only, and while tent camping is permitted, after visiting we felt that this campground was much better suited for RV campers. However we have come here for the day to hike and enjoy the playground by the picnic area, and it is a beautiful park, with a large lake, a restaurant, and a bridge that is iconic to the Cumberland region of Tennessee.
Of the five camping loops, loop 4 offers the most shade (particularly sites 102-109, which are shaded by evergreens and some of the prettiest campsites I have seen in a state park!), although is not ADA accessible. Loop 2 offers the least amount of shade. Loops 1, 3, and 5 have mostly hardwood trees, thus offering more shade in the warmer months and mostly sun in the winter. All sites have picnic tables and fire rings, and most can accommodate trailers up to 60 feet, with a few going higher (site 145 can fit over 100'!). Tent camping is permitted, although in most sites the only space to put a tent is very close to the fire pits or on a gravel/concrete surface, and in loops 2, 3, and 5 the park prohibits tents on the grass within each site.
Amenities at this park include hiking, fishing, paddling/boat rental, biking, a swimming pool, golf, and birding. Cabins are also available to rent, many with a view of the lake. Day use includes picnic tables, picnic pavilions, and multiple playground areas for kids. This park is also further away from urban areas and is a good place for wildlife viewing--we have seen black snakes, and what looked like a raccoon!
This is a much less crowded park than Fall Creek Falls to the south, particularly if you can make it early in the season, and is convenient to I-40, premium golfing, and historical sites on the Cumberland Plateau. While there are better options in this region for someone looking to pitch a tent, if you have an RV, Cumberland Mountain is very peaceful, offering a lot of ways to spend your day and a quiet and relaxing spot to watch the stars and enjoy the sounds of nature at night.
GuideWe have not camped here but being close to home we go often. The hiking is easy enough up to the falls that our child could do this even when he was 4. You can go down and play in the falls as well. This is a beautiful place!
GuideA short hike to several backcountry sites. Our original spot was Panther Gap Rockhouse. Unfortunately this site was wet! Everything was wet! There was a fire ring and tables available at this site. But we moved to Tub Springs which was amazing! Very windy but dry! Fireplace, fire pit, bear safe storage container and several tables were available. We will definitely we back to the Tub Springs site again! Note there was no water source available at either locations.
GuideMy boyfriend and I spent one night there in the flat fork tent campsite where we were only separated by a tiny fence from both people on each side no privacy whatsoever we spent the whole night hearing the father yell at his son maybe 5 feet away the other sites in the loop (closer to the office) were even closer together don’t go here if you like the get away from people because you can’t! Also people had no problem walking through our site!
TravelerWe stayed at campsite 8 (primitive section) we loved the site, it was huge, and we had a great time. The water was almost all dried up but there was still enough left behind out camp site to lay & play in. My daughter (9 yrs) brought her bike and was able to ride all around the camp site & have a blast. Being a Ultra Runner fan girl I of course had to take a picture of the infamous Barkley Marathon yellow gate. I even had time to get in a hike up to Castle Rocks. We definitely want to come back in the Fall. 🌲✌🍻🏃♀️
GuideThis is my family and I’s favorite campground, it’s super clean and feels secluded. Even with just about every campsite filled it was quite and everyone was respectful during quite hours. The bathrooms and showers are cleaned every day which is really nice. The trash is picked up everyday as well. Highly recommend Frozen ahead and we all can’t wait to go back!
TravelerStayed from Thur-Sun. This park is beautiful. So many awesome hikes. Guided and unguided. They have primitive as well as close to the amenities. Rangers have kids activities set up and they do rounds to make sure you have everything you need. It’s a must! Dog and kid friendly.

GuideWe have my husbands family reunion there every year and camp for a week while there. Campsites are clean and spacious with gravel pad. Two shepherds hooks for hanging lanterns and trash bags. Bathrooms are always clean and in working conditions. Be advised, the last two years there’s been baby copperhead snakes that hang around outside the bath house at night.

TravelerImpressed by how well maintained this campground was for how quiet it was midweek. Beautiful park, nice campground within ear shot of a creek. Bathroom was very clean and showers were so hot I thought I melted my flip flops for a second. Most sites have cool boulders for kiddos. The library was a nice surprise with a modest collection of books (not just for kids). No Verizon service at the campground but 1 bar at the visitor center which I could bike to in two minutes. Next time I go I will try to snag site 14

You can reserve your spot, they have plenty of room between sites, there’s some good hiking, the creek runs through so you can hear the running water all night. Bathroom were immaculate, they clean them religiously. Can’t say enough about this gem!

GuideThis place was absolutely amazing from start to finish! The campsite is a little small, but well dispersed amongst the rest. We had plenty of shade thanks to the trees, and I honestly can’t think of anything negative about our experience here.
It was peaceful at night and the lightening bugs that took shelter under our rainfly at night looked like a spectacular star show. I’ve never seen anything like it before.
Bathhouse is beautiful. Weird to say about a bathroom, I know, but it really was. Gorgeous cedar stalls helped to cut any odors, the showers were equipped with cedar benches, safety rails for those needing assistance, and a mobile shower head to ensure you get all those hard to reach spots. They were cleaned regularly, and there was even a sink with a sprayer around back that made cleaning our camp dishes a breeze.
They have a book barn!!! It’s a small building full of all kinds of different books you or your kids can borrow to read while there, and return when done. This was so cool to me and a rarity. My kids loved it and read every evening.
There is a large playground near the camp area by a creek, with a bathhouse, pavilions, and picnic area right across the park road.
So many cool trails that ranged from easy to difficult and were well marked. Take the S Old Mac trail to see an old dynamite shed about 0.4 miles in. Take the interpretive loop to walk across the beautiful wooden bride, or cool off in the ice cold creek below it with easy access.
They have two trails that lead to falls, and are relatively easy to hike. There’s another trail called the storybook trail that has lots of pictures and information to stop and read along the way.
Frozen Head has a rich history tied to the historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary that once housed some of the most dangerous murderers, rapists, and all out criminals in the US. You can visit this abandoned prison roughly 20 mins away in Petros, TN and even talk to some of the former inmates.
And last but not least, the Rangers were amazing! They held so many activities for the kids and were so patient with answering their questions. Even the volunteers we would encounter were kind and full of information.
