conveniently located for national park access

it's a bbit claustrophobic, each site being quite close to the other. We were tent ccamping, and iit appears that most of the sites are a better desiggned for RV camping. Being as close as it is to great Smoky Mountains National Park, it was predictably absoolutely full the entire week we were there, so  one's enjoyment may have a lot to do with who your next-door neighbors are, especially when you are tent camping and don't have the advantage of your own personal sound dampening and air conditioning. But if you want to be close to the national park, this is a great pick, as you are just a couple miles from the beginning off the Townsend entrance to the park.

When we were there, they had also installed a couple of restored teardrop traailers from what appeared to be the 1960s. On our last night, we decided to switch from tent camping to   renting one of the teardrops, which was quite small but quite fun, quite kitschy, restored to match the era.

In spite of the fact that the camp is located right along a busy highway, the noise level was not too big of a problem since the campsites are not dirrectly next to the highway but  rather back in further, with some of  the more coveted spots being right next to the river. Even  if your camp spot is not on the river, there are two or three places to access it, making it possible to cool down onn a hot muggy summer day by wading in the very cold stream, or even tubing down to your campsite by having someone drop you upstream. I don't think they rent tubes at the campground but there are several places within walking distance that do.

The restrooms were quite nice for campsite restrooms — three or four private showers in each restroom, sinks with mirrors, etc. They keep out non-guests by having the restrooms accessible with a key code lock.

The pool looks nice and is well maintained, but we did not use it. There is also a big pavilion used by some church group every Sunday morning, offering worship services to vacationers, and dooing Sunday school crafts with the little kids.

Thank you, Richard, for your detailed review! We're glad to hear that the highway noise wasn't a major issue and that you enjoyed the river access and well-maintained restrooms. We hope you'll have the chance to use our pool and participate in the Sunday activities during your next visit.

Awful place

I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. They completely do not respect their guests. I booked a half a year in advance and asked the question if they have a separate bed for each and they assured me they do. Unfortunately, my child ended up sleeping on the table. I tried to ask for an additional mattress or a partial/full refund but they didn’t want to hear me. They offered me to go to the store and buy one for myself. A complete disrespect I drove for six hours to be as disappointed as I had never been in life. Please, beware that coming here you’re going to sleep either on the floor or on the table and the staff doesn’t care about you or do not respect you. People, please do not come here.

We apologize if there was miscommunication regarding the sleeping arraignments in our cabins. We try to be very clear that we provide sleeping spaces for 5 guests – one queen sized bed, one twin-sized mattress in our loft, and a table that converts into a full-sized bed.

We would be more than happy to discuss this matter further with you. Please reach out to our office at 865-448-6421 at your convenience.

Nice place

Quiet little campground. Has camper and tent sites. Has a pool. River access. I really liked that they have a family restroom that is separate from the regular men’s and women’s bathroom. They will even come around and pick up your trash if you have it set out by the pavement by 10am. Sites are a little small but I’ve seen smaller.

Camping Go-to in Townsend

We have stayed in Townsend many times and love Mountaineer. Carolyn and Don are great owners and so good to get to know. The Little River runs along the back sites. Beautiful property and so close to GSMNP.

Right on the river

This campground is right on the river. Sites are well spaced, so you are not on top of your neighbors. Lots of trees and shade. Pool and playground. Full hookups and dump station. There is a small store.

Awesome place

Love the staff there. They were extremely nice and kind. The kids loved it. Especially the polls. Bathrooms where clean. A little aged but not disgusting at all. For a mans standard it’s a 9/10 for my wife she said a high 7/10 for cleanliness. Had a power and water issue and the staff was quick to help out. Love this place. Definitely see y’all again next year. Price was definitely reasonable.

Cozy campground in the Smokies

This campground is a great little place to stay if you want to camp in the Gatlinburg area. The owners are so sweet, and it's right on the Little Pigeon River. They have a little pool and a store, and they're located right next to this sweet little drive-in restaurant where my family always goes for ice cream & fries! Be aware that the loop is small, so getting in there with a huge truck and trailer is always interesting.
