Big Ridge State Park sits on the edge of Norris Lake in the Tennessee foothills, managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority and open year-round to campers arriving by car, boat, or foot. The campground is organized across two levels and three sections, with ADA-accessible sites near the entrance, a middle section closest to the water that draws anglers and paddlers, and an upper tier reached by driving or walking past the beach area, connected back down via stairs. Roads into and through the park are narrow and winding, so drivers with longer rigs should factor that in before arrival.
Water access is the defining feature here. Several sites sit directly along Norris Lake, and even those that don't are typically a short walk from the shore. Boat ramps are on the grounds, and the lake supports kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. As T. D. notes, it's a "short walk to lake with view of lake from campsite." The surrounding trails range from easy lake-side loops to more demanding backcountry routes, and the park also has a swimming area, though some visitors have noted geese activity near the beach.
Site spacing gets mixed marks. Reviewers consistently describe the sites as closer together than typical for a state park, and tent campers should know that not every site has a flat, suitable tent footprint. RVs are well-represented here, and hookup sites provide both water and electric. Bryan R. observed the sites are "large with plenty of space and you don't feel like your neighbors are invading your privacy," though others found the layout more compact. The bathhouses are a split picture: two newer, clean facilities and one older one.
The campground has no services within roughly 30 minutes, so arriving with supplies is essential. Cell coverage is spotty, with T-Mobile specifically called out as unreliable. Weekends draw more visitors; midweek stays are notably quieter. Reservations are available and worth booking in advance for lake-adjacent sites. Campers exploring campgrounds around Big Ridge State Park will find other TVA-managed options in the area, including Loyston Point TVA Campground a few miles to the northwest.
The lake is the main draw, and campers who plan to spend most of their time on the water will get the most out of Big Ridge.
