Spacious sites: South Mountains State Park Family Campground offers roomy accommodations. "Our site was an 'leveling,' octagonal, elevated, crushed gravel pad, surrounded by landscape timbers...an elevated fire ring with a swing-over, non-adjustable grate, a picnic table and metal lantern pole," describes Dave V.
Water proximity: Many campgrounds feature water access. "We stayed at the family camping area, it was great, we had site 6 and it was on the river and the kids loved it! Cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen!!" reports Jessica L. about South Mountains State Park.

Variable site conditions: Horse campgrounds may have uneven terrain. "Many camping sites are very much in need of leveling. Sites slope from left to right, front to back, and some slope in both ways," warns Richard E. about Kings Mountain.
Seasonal crowds: Reservations are essential during peak times. "It gets jam packed on the weekend. Staff isn't terribly friendly. Lots of big group tent campers," notes Candy H.
Varied amenities: Horse camping facilities range from primitive to full-service. "This state park is relatively close for us in Charlotte and we have camped here on a few occasions. The campground is clean and the spots are level and decently spaced. Easy access to the creek and hiking trails from the campground," says Rushell R.
Tips for camping with families
Consider accessible options: Cane Creek Park offers family-friendly features. "Holidays usually have some activities for kids. The mini golf is free and a blast. The swim area is only open on Saturdays or you can drive to the day use side and be over there," explains Sarah B.
Pack for weather changes: Mountain elevations cause temperature fluctuations. "We stayed in May for a weekend. It was full of people and kids. There were great trails for you and your pup's to go hiking on," shares Rachel R.
Plan for no connectivity: Cell service is limited at many equestrian campgrounds. "Very quiet with NO cell service which is a big draw for us. Far from a town, so don't forget anything," advises Stephen M.
Tips from RVers
Check access roads: Some equestrian campgrounds near Clover have challenging approaches. "The road into the campground is narrow, hilly and windy. We were able to do it in our 32 foot class A, but luckily no one was coming the other direction," warns Karen S.
Verify hookup locations: Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort offers more reliable RV setups. "Sites were clean, level, and reasonably spaced. The campground is very conveniently located in South Charlotte and it was great to back to this area and catch up with friends and family," notes Kevin A.
Prepare for variable conditions: "We have stayed at Cane Creek 2x now and enjoy the park so much. Lake, hiking trails and nice wooded campsites with fire rings and close proximity to bath houses. Only problem is that both times we visited there was a storm and power went out for hours," shares Jeanette M.
