No Reservations

In the morning we saw a bald eagle fly in front of a rainbow over the ocean.

Not technically a campground, but you can sleep here on the beach if you tuck away into the dunes. There are no bathrooms and no showers. My partner and I rode bikes out to the South Jetty near Florence and set a tent in the hills. Can be difficult to haul loaded bikes over the steep dune to access the beach.

Leave no trace!

Close to beach and spacious

Visited here in January so had the place to ourselves at night. Off roaders during the day. Very soft sand getting to the dispersed camp sites. Air down tires and bring an on board air compressor and a shovel. I was in a truck camper and the weight made it difficult. Some roads were flooded out. We didn't make it to our preferred camp site but found a spot on the dunes. Reservations online and Oregon ohv permit required.

Nice views at night and a lot of beach to walk and run the dogs on. Solitude during the off season but had to work for it.

Beautiful beach

The best part about this beach for camping is the clean sandy beach that stretches far and wide with tons of homemade drift wood shelters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access South Jetty Sand Camping in Florence, Oregon?

South Jetty Sand Camping is accessed via designated beach access roads near Florence, Oregon. The area features very soft sand, so it's highly recommended to air down your tires before driving in. Bring an onboard air compressor for re-inflation when leaving and pack a shovel in case you get stuck. Some access roads may be flooded seasonally. Four-wheel drive vehicles with adequate ground clearance are strongly recommended for safely navigating the soft sand terrain.

What type of camping is allowed at South Jetty in Florence?

South Jetty offers dispersed beach camping in the sandy dunes area. This is primitive camping with no designated sites or infrastructure. Campers can set up anywhere in the dunes area away from the main beach, often tucking into natural sheltered areas. Many visitors create temporary camps near driftwood structures for added protection from wind. There are no official boundaries or marked sites, providing a true boondocking experience by the ocean.

Is South Jetty part of Thousand Trails campgrounds?

No, South Jetty Sand Camping is not part of the Thousand Trails campground system. It's a primitive dispersed camping area on public beach land, not a developed campground with formal management. Thousand Trails operates private membership campgrounds with amenities like hookups and facilities, which South Jetty lacks. For developed camping options in the Florence area, you'll need to look at established campgrounds rather than this dispersed beach camping location.

What are the best campsites at South Jetty in Florence, Oregon?

The best spots at South Jetty are tucked away in the dunes that offer natural wind protection while still providing ocean views. Look for areas with driftwood structures that previous visitors have built, as these provide additional shelter from coastal winds. The area is dispersed camping without designated sites, so you're free to choose locations with the best combination of privacy, views, and protection from the elements. During busy seasons, arrive early to secure spots further from high-traffic areas while still maintaining a safe distance from tide lines.
