Elkhorn is located near Prineville in the Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River National Grassland. The terrain consists of forested areas and open grasslands. Campers can explore the nearby Painted Hills and the John Day Fossil Beds, with temperatures ranging from 30°F in winter to 85°F in summer.

Located on the edge of Forest Service land in the Maury Mountains and nestled under large ponderosa pine trees, this campground is relatively easy to reach yet still has a secluded feel. Directions
From Prineville: Travel southeast on Highway 380 for about 32 miles. Turn south onto Forest Service Road 16 and continue for about 5 miles. Elkhorn Campground will be on your left, just past the National Forest Boundary.
