Within Willamette National Forest, Mountain View Winter Shelter provides free hike-in camping on open terrain. This US Forest Service site requires campers to walk in with their gear, making it accessible only to those prepared for backcountry-style access. The open landscape offers unobstructed exposure to weather conditions.
The shelter sits in an area with several other campgrounds around Willamette National Forest, including nearby options like Duffy Lake Trailhead just over a mile northeast. Campers should come prepared with all necessary supplies and gear suitable for primitive conditions and variable mountain weather.
Description
Accessed from the Maxwell Sno-park, the shelter is open for day use and overnight stays. Overnight maximum capacity is 15 persons. Visitors to the Mt. View Shelter can use either the Big Meadows road or the Maxwell Sno-Park parking areas; however, it is recommended that overnight visitors use the Maxwell area since there is a risk of vehicles at Big Meadows being temporarily "plowed in" in the event of a major snowfall overnight. Please report any misuse, vandalism or suggestions to the Detroit Ranger District.
