Tucked into Siuslaw National Forest about four miles off Highway 101, Horse Creek Campground is built first and second for equestrians. Nearly every one of the 11 sites includes a horse corral, fire pit, and picnic table, with natural vegetation providing separation between sites. Only two sites are designated for non-stock campers, which is worth knowing before you arrive.
The access road is narrow, with room for only one vehicle in most stretches, and reviewers note some significant potholes that make daylight arrival a practical necessity, especially for anyone pulling a trailer. Cell service from AT&T and Verizon is available but weak. Vault toilets are on-site, and there is a water trough for horses, though as Laura M. notes, "there is water for horses, but it's not potable for humans." Pack in your own drinking water and pack out your trash.
The surrounding trail network draws riders and hikers alike, though the terrain runs hilly enough that horse fitness matters. Crowd patterns vary considerably by season and day of week. Sites can fill on weekends, while early-June visits may find the campground nearly empty. Frogs are audible at night. Campers wanting a wider range of campsites near Florence will find additional options along the coast and in the forest interior. The nearby Siuslaw NF Dispersed near Horse Creek provides a no-frills alternative for those without stock.
