Gravel lots and dispersed pull-outs define the layout at Badlands Rock Camping, a free BLM site on the high desert east of Bend. Finding the right spot takes some navigation: campers report that turning where large piles of gravel are visible leads to more secluded options, while sites closest to the highway entrance tend to catch more road noise. No reservations are required, and the area accommodates rigs of most sizes.
The landscape is sagebrush and juniper, with low hills that can give individual sites a sense of separation from neighbors. Cell coverage is inconsistent but workable in some areas, enough to handle calls or a video meeting according to multiple visitors. Coyotes are active at night. Campfires are permitted, and previous campers sometimes leave wood behind at established fire rings.
Oregon Badlands Dispersed sits less than a mile to the northeast, and Dry River Canyon BLM Dispersed near Horse Ridge is about 1.7 miles south, giving the corridor a cluster of no-fee options. Campers planning a longer stay in the region can browse campgrounds near BLM Land — Prineville Deschutes Field Office for additional dispersed and managed sites. One reviewer noted access was blocked by large rocks and no-motor-vehicle signs, so conditions can change. Call the BLM Prineville Deschutes Field Office before heading out to confirm current access.
