Short Mountain Cove

General: Two loops situated along the Arkansas River. Because all CoE campgrounds now require reservations, we did so in advance even though it was not necessary in early March. The signage to the recreation area was sufficient but once there (via a pot-hole-filled road) there are no signs indicating where the sites are and how to get to them. 

Site Quality/Facilities: Everything was snow-covered when we arrived so we could not judge the condition of the amenities which included a concrete picnic table, cooking stand, fire pit, and lantern hook. All sites were electric which worked fine and were needed to plug in our space heater. 

Bathhouse: I was dismayed to learn that the restroom in our loop was locked up, likely for the winter. Although I was afraid this might be the case, it would have been nice to know this in advance. Or, I don’t understand why this loop was not closed as there were plenty of open sites in the loop with one working restroom (which was three-quarters of a mile walk from our loop). This restroom was an all-in-one with a shower, sink, and toilet. I’m not sure I would want to use the shower but did not try it. No soap, paper towels or air dryer so make sure you bring these things with you. Also, when the campground is full in the summer, it did not appear that the available restrooms would be sufficient. 

Activities/Amenities: There is a boat ramp, playground, volleyball net, and, near the day-use area, a basketball hoop. If it is important to you, cell service (Verizon) was very weak. 

Conclusion: CoE campgrounds are the gold standard for us when looking for campgrounds but this one did not measure up in our opinion.
