Mary Jane Thurston State Park Campground

The Maumee River flows directly past several campsites at Mary Jane Thurston State Park Campground, where RVs up to 50 feet can access electric and water hookups through a compact layout. Sites cluster close together with limited privacy between neighbors, though riverside spots provide open water views and wildlife watching opportunities. Andrea F. notes watching "seagulls play and catch food while great blue herons skimmed that water and fisherman were out fly fishing."

Walk-in tent sites offer more separation from the main camping area, while premium sites include both electric and water connections. The campground operates year-round with rates ranging from $29 to $39 per night, and weekend stays require two-night minimum reservations. Highway noise affects some sites, particularly those positioned away from the river corridor.

Bathroom and shower facilities require a quarter-mile walk to the nearby marina, where campers also access potable water and dump station services. The towpath trail connects directly to Grand Rapids, allowing visitors to walk into town for dining and shopping. The Grand Kerr House sits just half a mile east for those exploring additional places to camp around Grand Rapids.

Verizon cell service reaches the campground reliably, and a disc golf course provides on-site recreation alongside river access for fishing and paddling.

Visitors often highlighted the spacious riverside sites and scenic river views, though facilities like restrooms are located inconveniently at a distant marina. Some campers noted concerns about close site spacing and road noise from highways.

$34 per night for tent (primitive) camping

It's expensive to stay here, but at least it's a place to park. And it gets us closer to our destination. There are electric hook-ups on some sites, but it costs more. And they do have water. I didn't see a gray dump, but they probably do have one.

Lots to do here

The camp sites on the river are excellent. Some sights are by the highway. They are still nice, but lots of road noise. There is no water at the camp sites, but water is available. There are no shower facilities. There are great hiking trails and a nice frisbee golf course.

Good spot.

We had spot 8 and it was a good spot. It was a pull through spot that could fit a pretty large RV we will be staying here again if it is close on our travels. Highly recommend

Great spot!

We stayed at site 8, enjoyed not having much of a crowd. View of the river was beautiful. Easy pull through access.

Decent, quiet

We were in a premium site (#2) which means we had electric & water. Sites have ample space & shade. The only real negative is the bathrooms & shower house are a mile or so away at the marina, kind of odd.

A Hidden Gem

This is a small campground no question! That being said we had one of our best camping experiences. Our site was right along the Maumee River and our view was just breathtaking. We watching the seagulls play and catch food while great blue herons skimmed that water and fisherman were out fly fishing. It was just a very peaceful setting.

There are lots of bike trails as the towpath trail goes through the park and it even leads into the little town of Grand Rapids. A quaint town with lots of antiques store and boutique with a brewery and pizza shop. ( the ice shop was closed for the season 🙁)

The only odd thing was your potable water and dump station were located at the Marina about a 1/4 mile down the road. Not a huge deal but a little inconvenient.

The Verizon cell service was great as well.

We will definitely go back to this park.

Beautiful View

We have a Xtra large 5th wheel and dualy truck. It can be tough to find comfortable campgrounds. My husband parked the 5th wheel fairly easily. Clean and simple campground. Super cute little playground for the kids very close. Right on the water! A little buggy but that’s to be expected on the river!

Decent campground on the Maumee River

Only 30 minutes down the river from Independence Dam State Park, this park was markedly different. Because there was a two-night minimum reservation on weekends and we were just passing through, we decided to try and roll the dice and see if we could slide into a spot for just a night without a reservation. Alas, the only spots still available were walk-in tent sites which would not work for us. This park was laid out more like an RV park with the sites very close together and no privacy between them (Site 16 looked to be the best one for privacy). Except for the walk-in tent sites, electric and/or electric/water hookups were available. As we pulled in, the host immediately greeted us and was very friendly (she genuinely wanted to find us a spot). There is a marina/store close-by and the quaint town of Grand Rapids (which you could walk to if you wanted) had several shops and restaurants. We would have stayed here for the night if a site had been available, so make sure you make reservations if you are coming on a weekend (and can stay for two nights).
