Hook Lake (Campground A) — Jesse Owens State Park

    Great Dispersed Camp Ground

Drove past Sandy Hollow which is another great Dispersed Campground with around 82 sites to cover all types of vehicles within a mile of Hook Lake.

Hook Lake has less sites but also sites to handle all types of vehicles.

I am here in October and there are very few other campers, two at the moment.

I chose a site on a hill that I was able to get my 40+ rig into, I was all by myself with a great view.

I have Verizon which is almost constant, and TMobile which is spotty. Other sites might not have as good of cell service.

They have trash, but no water.

Both of the Camp Grounds mentioned there is no danger of getting a big rig into and not out of so don’t be afraid.

    I grew up here.

Well, honestly I love this place. I grew up in the Ohio valley and I love living here. I used to have a large family when I was young and we would get together here and rent out large portions of lots and all the kids would play on the trails and flash light tag at night. There is a section for horses and bridle trails for them as well, with one large trail that circles the entire encampment. There are play grounds, basketball courts, a beach. Fishing is good and you can rent kayaks and boats. There are bathrooms and showers which were recently replaced with brand new facilities. There is even a little store where you can buy snacks, camping gear and even rent corn hole boards. I have a lot of good memories at this place. I think you would, too.

    Great fall camping

Dated, but pretty clean bath\shower building with clothes washer and dryer ($2). Sites in C-loop are far enough apart to not feel too crammed together. Power pedestal has 20, 30 and 50 amp service. 30 amp worked fine. Lots of trails, allowing dogs on leash. True, other amenities are a drive of at least a couple miles to get to. ATT service was fine for streaming using ROKU and my phone as a hotspot. Paved, level pads, but not long enough for largest trailers. Check size if you have one. Sites at South end of loop get the most shade

Always love going to salt fork. Bathrooms are always clean and I appreciate having wash racks for the horses. If i had a complaint it would be that the campground is always pretty busy

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    Average Campground, Amazing Park

Someone cancelled and this amazing site fell into our lap. I always put a ridiculous amount of time into finding sites that match our wants/needs list. This campground has very few sites that make the cut, but F08 was perfect. Backed up to the woods, has a view of the lake, shade, privacy, hammock trees, medium size, electric, bathroom directly across the street, water and grey water dump directly across the street.

Everywhere we camp, we color code a campground map with sites we like/dislike. This campground had about 7 sites we liked out of over 200. There are almost no sites with shade or privacy, many are small and oddly angled towards the road. They do all have 15A, 30A and 50A hookups and newer, level pads. The bathrooms however are very outdated. They still have the spring loaded faucets that you have to hold open and the men's shower houses is still a shared room for your things and changing. Worst of all, the water pressure was terrible and constantly changing.

This campground is in one of Ohio's largest state parks and is very popular. Which is why a lot of these negatives are pretty shocking to us. Like the never developed D loop. You would think for such a large and busy park, they would want as many sites as possible and to update the facilities.

One of my complaints about all of Ohio's state parks is the lack of tree preservation. Almost all of the state parks just clear the land to install power/water. You'd think a Ohio State Division of Wildlife State Park would take a bit extra care and attention to preserve some of them which also makes for a much better camping experience.

Overall, the positive rating isn't for the campground but rather the almost 20,000 acre state park. It is insanely huge and has many, many places to see and explore. There are beaches (even a private one for the campground), boat launches, hunting roads, historical house/cottage that is a museum, a cave and more.

Lastly, The Dyrt never seems to map the campground correctly so I couldn't do their cell network tests. However, Mint/T-Mobile and Verizon had pretty strong 5G. It slowed down a few times but was there the entire time.

    All the essentials

Small campground, lower camp sites are pretty close together but it's treed and shady with a creek running through. No one was here during our stay so felt like we had the campground to ourselves. Newer flush toilets near the group camp sites are nice. Camp store has showers for camper use. Really pretty lake!

    Peaceful

Enjoyed a couple nights. Limited use of the campground during our visit, so we enjoyed peace and quiet. Trees and undercover between sites to give some privacy. Easy towing our 28’ tow behind in and out. Verizon signal not bad.

    Great family camp ground!

Our family loves to camp at this local campground, super clean bathrooms and pool with kids area is so much fun. We had the best time when we camped at there for the fair, it was right next to the campground.  Only downfall is if it rains the end lots get really muddy.

    Relax close to home

We had a great weekend trip at Barkcamp. Easy to get to from the highway. Some of the spots are a little tight if you have any slides but are generous in length for the spot. Included a fire ring and paved area for picnic table. Super animal friendly.

    Decent

We stayed in the A8 campsite.  Sites aren't too close together, spots aren't level but not awful.  The bathrooms were the worst state park bathrooms I have ever used.  Expect to use your car a lot at this park as things are spaced pretty far apart.

    Needs accurate website for bookings

Booked 2 sites online using website. Upon getting to our sites the numbers listed on the site posts did not match the numbers on the site map used for booking. Section 4. Seasonal campers verified the campground constantly changes site numbers around.. It is very misleading. Should not offer booking online or should make sure all online booking locations have the site numbers and pictures accurate. The site we had was NOT the one pictured on the map online. Very small, muddy, and could not even have a fire on it. Got lucky no one was across from us. We used that site to build a fire. Make sure you don't forget anything or need gas, not much around.

    Blue Rock State Park Campground

    Beautiful hidden gem campground

Lovely park near Zanesville. The park is beautiful, lots of wildlife, and the trails were great. There is a creek running through the main primitive campsites below the dam, with minnows and crawfish for the kids to catch, plenty of shade, and the remodel a few years ago added nice bathrooms over in the group camp area up against the base of the dam. The fishing was good, and the activities with the naturalist (Cayden) were fun and engaging. The hiking was wonderful, the equestrian trails looked very nice, and the fire tower was a fun climb. The beach was a little dirty from the geese, but that didn't slow anyone down on swimming. Also, while the showers were up by the beach, there was always plenty of hot water.

    Spring Valley Campground

    Needs some TLC

This campground used to be amazing. Now it is only so so. Roads are in desperate need of a load of gravel at the least, replaced at the most. Sites are vet close, like we felt bad hooking into all of our full hook up because the sewer hose was right in the middle of the next campsite. The girl at check in was very helpful. But note everything shuts down at 6. Store, pool, laundry room…everything. The lake is ok at best. Back in the day you could swim in it, now it is full of growth and the docks are falling apart. It is like the owners do not care if they update or not. Four showers in the shower house and 2 didn’t have curtains. Walmart is literally 5 min down the road. Buy some curtains. Would more than likely not come back to this one

    Great sitesThank

There are a lot of great full hook up sites here. Great for families and couples alike. It is a state park so if you are looking for a full blown activities schedule that is not going to happen. But the park is super nice and well taken care of. Private boat marina and beech for the campers. And the lake is very clean. Shower houses are clean and all have coin operated laundry in them

    Blissful loneliness.

This is obviously an active summer vacation spot. In March, on a weekend, we had the place to ourselves and it was gorgeous. Lakeside spot, snow flurries, quiet except for the woodpeckers. It is a bit of a drive from the freeway, but worth the effort. Cell service is very weak, but the wifi worked for us. Showers closed but vault toilets available. They did have a mandatory two night stay, which they should reconsider for this time of year. Make sure you ask for a level spot if you are in a shorty van…some are quite steep. For anyone who likes a private spot in nature for an overnight, I recommend.
