Equine Trail Head Primitive Campsites

Accessible via well-graded gravel roads, Equine Trail Head Primitive Campsites provides free camping on American Electric Power's reclaimed land with advance permit required. The campground features picnic tables, fire rings, and a pavilion alongside space for horse trailers and multiple tents. Porta-potties serve as the only restroom facilities.

Cell service remains unavailable according to campers, making this spot suitable for those wanting to disconnect completely. The campground sits adjacent to equestrian trails and connects to AEP's broader recreational network, which includes bike paths and wildlife areas on former strip-mined terrain. No pets are permitted on the property. For campers preferring developed amenities, Hook Lake (Jesse Owens State Park) offers full facilities less than a mile away.

The great wide open

American Electric Power has put together an awesome recreational area from the ReCreated wilderness near McConnellsville, Oh!

The Equine Trailhead camping area is adjacent to the Trailhead. There are picnic tables, fire rings, a pavilion and room for horse trailers as well as several tents. Porta pots are the only available facilities but that's the whole reason you go to the wilderness is to pee in the weeds right? Pre print your permit, your stay is free. No signal that I could find. Gravel roads in are well graded and new. Go online to get maps and additional info.

Knowledge is power:

AEP American Electric Power

McConnelsville, Oh

Offers The Wilds; 10,000 donated reclaimed land where wildlife species reside. Tree farms, hydro plants and deer hunting. Then there's the free camping with permit, horse trails, bike trails and dog training areas.

AEP not only ReCreated Land that was stripped mined, they made it an out door enthusiasts playground while conserving and putting things back better then they were. Check out their site online for more information and permit printing.
