    McDowell Nature Preserve

    Clean, lovely conveniently located

I camped here with a women’s hiking group and was impressed.

There are lovely trails, a large playground, nature center, the beautiful lake Wylie {no swimming, NC fishing license required}, geocaching, clean bathrooms and shower rooms, electric sites with large tent pads, good sized fire pit area, picnic table.. there’s even a loving gate with a code for a more secure camping experience..

We could fit 3 tents in one pad AND had a hammocker camper too.

If you are wanting some nature near the city, this is a good option - especially if you are checking out city things in Charlotte.

You can hear traffic at night when camping here so bring ear plugs, headphones or a white noise fan if that bothers you.

    Pet friendly 🐾

I saw both dogs and camping kitties

There’s 56 camp sites: these include tent, RV hook ups and some primitive.

There’s group camping at Copperhead Island.

I highly recommend, especially for families with children, lots to do and a safe, secure feeling.

    Keep Driving!

Subpar; seems to cater to long term residents. For the 3 pages of rules and regulations I was expecting a pristine campground; what we found was a half paved parking lot and our lot was on a hill side which made using our full hookups going up hill. No fire pit! Must provide ur own, rules state belongings must be 3ft away from away from neighboring sites which is almost impossible with how close sites are. Pass it up! Keep Driving! Would have given less than one star if possible

    Nice campground, lots of amenities.

Overall, this is a very nice, clean park conveniently located to the interstate I-85) and attractions in the area. It has all the amenities you would expect to find at a KOA such as a swimming pool, playground, dog park, miniature golf, store, clubhouse, and more (including goats). It is by far the nicest private campground in the area that we have stayed at.

This KOA has 127 sites offering varying degrees of services to accommodate RV's, tents, and those wanting to rent cabins. We chose a 50-amp full hook-up back-in site but were upgraded to a pull-thru so we could be in a sunny location to mitigate the chilly air. How nice of them! Our site (#79) was perfectly level as were most others (but not all). Water, electric, and cable hook-ups were well placed at the site and worked fine. We paid $37/night(with the KOA member discount). Nice, large grassy area for dogs to walk and sniff and there is a decent size dog park.  Roads and pads are hard packed gravel with grass in between sites. Some sites are set in a wooded area while some are out in the open with plenty of sun and satellite coverage. The park is big rig friendly and the roads are easily navigable. All sites have a picnic table and some had fire pits but ours did not. Cable is included and offered over 50 channels. Wifi worked well at our site.  The laundry was small with three washers and three dryers but very clean and had a decent book exchange. The bathroom and showers were super clean and looked like they were updated recently.

The campground is extremely clean and the owners/employees are super friendly. There is a short hiking trail (less than a mile) through the woods and plenty of green space in front of some of the pull-thrus. playground large swimming pool with large deck putt putt with lots of goat humor.

The only downside would be the closeness of sites but that is pretty much what you expect from private RV parks. Fortunately, we did not have neighbors right next to us which gave us more space. I'm usually not a KOA fan but have to say this one was great for our overnight stay and we would recommend it.

    Good location

Overall this is an ok campground. Beware of many tight small sites that slope front to back. These are the sites closets to the main office. The sites in the back are very level but seem to have a bunch of long term and are reserved for bigger rigs. Bathrooms were very clean and the WiFi was excellent.

Sites were easy to access, full hook-up, easy check-in. Quiet times were honored, which was a big plus. First time I ever slept in until 10:00 am. My site was respected, considering I was next to the water/beach area. The beach area was closed for the season, but it was a nice view anyway.

We spent the last few days at the Carowinds Camp Wilderness campground in Site 70 with full hook-ups.  Sites were clean, level, and reasonably spaced.  The campground is very conveniently located in South Charlotte and it was great to back to this area and catch up with friends and family.

    Basic Parking Lot Campground

We stayed here on our way North to head home. It's in a decent location, the sites are level with full hook ups. The nighttime noise was bothersome, not sure where it was coming from, likely outside the campground. We didn't do the amusement park because of Covid and being almost below freezing. Maybe if we had, it would have been more appealing?

    Not so much...

Full hook up, and laundry. Really about the only "nice" things here. Spots are right on top of each other, not very flat, gravel and grass. Store has basics....but mostly empty shelves. Shower adequate....it was cold in the bathroom/shower area, no heat. To be fair, this is off season...so pool closed, recreation room closed..... But if ya just need to park it for a few days, catch up on laundry, grab a shower....its okay.

    Very nice park

We stayed at the park a couple of times. It’s a very nice county park with full hook ups. They are doing construction right now redoing the boat docks, beach and playgrounds area. It will be very nice when done. Some sites are a little small and some are not very level but if you call the campground hosts and rangers are very helpful in helping you get on the right sight.

We stayed here in June 2021 as an overnight stay and we wished we could have stayed longer. The price was amazing! The full hook up sites were very clean and we felt good being so secure with the gate and rangers. We did take some time to walk along the beach and the park.

    Nice, Quiet Stay

Lovely little park in a small circle. About 25 campsites with some as full hook-ups. Sites are uneven so make sure you have blocks and not much around the campsite so this is a place to come and just relax. Bathhouse is ok; lake is beautiful for canoe or kayaking; but no swimming.

    Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort

    convenient to Carowinds, decent campground

Older campground lots of shade.  staff very friendly and helpful. We were really surprised with how much has been invested in Carowinds over the years by Cedar Fair that the campground has been untouched.  Bathrooms/bathhouses were very clean and seem to be the one part of the campground that has been updated.  One section of the campground has been turned into long term camping and many looked like they had been there for years.  campground was quiet other than noise from air traffic as airport is nearby but it was minor.   Campsites have decent space in between each other which is great bc the sites are small in length and you will be parking either beside the rig or sideways in front of it. We stayed in a back-in site and most back-in sites seemed rather level but pull throughs were hit or miss on that aspect.  If you are staying here to go to the park then it is very convenient and has an excellent shuttle that runs frequently and drops you off near the front gate.  Very small camp store that has most of the basics. Campground overall is clean, safe and secure but we expected a little more from theme park campground.  We live nearby and are pass holders at Carowinds so we will likely stay frequently due to the convenience.

Nice park and close to Charlotte.

Campground is part of Carowinds amusement park. Cabins and RV spaces are available. Prices are rather expensive during the season, but reasonable off-season. I've stayed here twice while visiting nearby Charlotte, and was pleased with the facility. RV spaces are a nice size with plenty of grass. Some airplane noise from planes using CLT, but wasn't bothersome. It's a short drive to restaurants and shopping, and very convenient if visiting Charlotte and surrounding cities. Will stay again.

Great for trip to Charlotte NC

We came here to do some trailer maintenance and because it is very close to home. We were not expecting it to be a great camping experience, but we’re pleasantly surprised! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the campsites were clean, and the bath houses were newly updated and immaculate. The roads in the section we stayed in were a bit rough (a combination of asphalt and gravel), but perfectly fine for camping. Most of the sites have good shade, but unfortunately our site was in full sun. Our site had full hookups, and a picnic table that was pretty rickety. No fire ring. The sites are very close together, and most are back to back sharing a driveway. Personally we prefer a more secluded camping spot, but this KOA is perfect for an overnight on your way to another location, a trip to nearby Charlotte, or like us, utilizing the full hookups for some waterline maintenance.

    It’s okay…

    First time at a KOA

Stopped here for an overnight on our way south. We had a pull-thru full hookup site. It was relatively level but not perfect. Main bath house was under construction and not available. There is a bar, convenience store, and RV service center at the entrance which is convenient. We didn’t have time to look around the campground much but it served it’s purpose for us. Oh, there are no fire rings but it claims on their site that you can build one in the gravel. We didn’t see a single other site with a fire.

    Truly excellent

Wonderful campground! Vintage without being run down. The owners have done a great job of retaining the "old school" charm of the place (originally established 1964 I think?) while keeping up with utilities and overall functionality. We particularly appreciated the intact tree canopy; many rv parks these days are sun baked parking lots but not here. I estimated roughly 60/40 hardwood/pine and there's sun or shade when you want either. General store, ice, firewood, propane refill all on-site. Playground and swimming pool clean and in good condition. The bath houses near our site were clean and functional, though I don't think they were the main ones. Lake Tillery 2 minutes away by foot (slip is private for campers I believe), Badin lake a short drive, Uwharrie NF a short drive. In our time here fellow campers were outgoing and friendly, relaxed and having a good time but without any of the riff-raff or over indulgence. This was our first visit, but coming from the nearby Charlotte area it's our new go-to campground.

    Beautiful park, great facilities

Full hookups were all filled but site 29 was a primitive, deep, level 57 foot site right near water siphon and a beautiful modern bathhouse picnic table and fire grate/ring. Fair amount of space between sites, firewood sold by camphost or ranger. Made yummy hot dogs over fire, wonderful night, hot showers, clean facilities. You will be thrilled with this park, lake is beautiful, many hiking trails, biking, etc. Verizon cell service was excellent at our site and appeared good throughout park.
