The lower slopes of Pilot Mountain house the family camping area where 42 campsites for tents and trailers are scattered among oaks and hickories.
Each site has a tent pad, table, and fire pit/grill. Drinking water is available throughout the campground, and two bathhouses with hot showers are located nearby.
Some campsites can accommodate RVs. There are no hookups or dump station provided. Please visit the reservations website for more information about the driveway length of each campsite.
The campground host sells firewood. Gathering wood in the park is prohibited.
No more than six people are allowed to occupy a campsite. The camping area is open from March 15 to November 30.

► Paddle-in camping
Two paddle-in campsites are located at the Ivy Bluffs access on the south bank of Yadkin River. Reservations are required to use these campsites.
There is no water or toilet facilities at these campsites. You must bring your own water and pack out all trash and waste.
Camping is allowed only in designated areas. Camping is prohibited on the Yadkin River Islands.
The nearest boat access upstream from the campsite is located at the Shoals fishing and boating access, at 4454 Shoals Road, East Bend, NC 27018. The paddle from this access is about 1 mile. As of March 15, 2021, the next downstream boat access at Donnaha Park is closed until Fall 2023. Please plan accordingly.

Salthouse Branch Campground is nestled on the shores of Philpott Lake in the rugged foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. The park is located in a rural and sparsely populated part of Franklin County near the small community of Henry. Philpott Lake's clear water and natural shoreline make it a unique place for visitors to enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking and camping. The lake provides visitors with great boating and swimming opportunities. Anglers enjoy fishing for large and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish. A 1/2-mile nature loop and a 1/2-mile interpretive trail are available in the campground. Many additional miles of hiking and biking trails surround Philpott Lake, allowing visitors to get out and explore this scenic area.
Philpott Lake covers 2,900 acres and has 100 miles of shoreline. The lake's steep, rocky banks meet beautiful mixed forests of oak, maple, hickory, pine and cedar. Wildlife is abundant throughout the area. Deer, turkeys, squirrels, raccoons, and a variety of songbirds and waterfowl are commonly viewed.
The lake is adjacent to Fairystone State Park and Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area, which includes 5,300 acres of public recreational lands.

Smith Mountain Lake Campgrounds' Site Types: Two-bedroom frame - Two bedrooms; wood frame; one queen bed; two singles; foldout couch; ceramic tile floors with carpeted bedrooms. Two-bedroom cabins have a bathroom with shower. Two-bedroom frame waterview - Two bedrooms; wood frame; one queen bed; two singles; foldout couch; ceramic tile floors with carpeted bedrooms. The two-bedroom cabins have a bathroom with shower. Three-bedroom frame - Three bedrooms; wood frame; two queen beds; two singles; foldout couch; ceramic tile floors with carpeted bedrooms. The three bedroom cabin has two bathrooms (one universally accessible shower; the other has a tub). The three-bedroom cabins are meant to sleep six. Eight are allowed, but this relies on the use of a fold-out sofa for the extra two people. The park has a camping lodge (bunkhouse), which is not a full service lodge, for rent. It's a two-room trailer with seven bunk beds ( five in one room and two in another), a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a coffee pot and air conditioning. It has no heating. The bunkhouse has a has a porch and a large covered deck with two picnic table, two other tables and eight chairs. It also has a charcoal grill and a fire ring. Smoking, portable heaters and cooking, except with the microwave oven, are not permitted in the lodge. There's a fire hydrant next to the lodge in the parking lot. Four vehicles are permitted with rental of the lodge; the daily parking fee must be paid for additional vehicles. RVs and trailers may not be parked in the bunk house parking lot; there's an overflow parking lot about 100 yards away.

I stayed on the “not great for kids” side. Camp host said the other part of the park was better for families and had easier trail inclines. I loved my spot. It was quieter than I expected given how close the camp sites were to each other.

Best campground I’ve stayed at on a bike. Very welcoming, quiet and peaceful. Few small town stores about a mile away including gas. Nice bath houses with shower. We had a fire every night and good conversation. Great stop, 10/10 I will make a point to be back!

Cons, not great around our fire pit, you can’t really sit around the fire pit because it’s not leveled, chars just fall. Not great if you don’t get a level spot if you have small children. It’s very rocky and small children will fall often. Not fun as a parent. A big con if you absolutely cannot deal with spiders. Ok. So this one might be a bit dramatic to some, however, if you don’t love bugs, be warned that there are hundreds of daddy long legs, just so so so many. And they get everywhere. We don’t mind bugs. We understand camping in tents will be bug heaven. We just didn’t expect to see hundreds. You have been warned. Site 14

The camp ground is in need of upkeep. Campsites fine. All have a fire ring. Beware with pull thru’s your water and electric will be on the “wrong side”- you’re door will be facing the road and picnic table, fire ring will be behind you. The trails are poorly if at all maintained and trail signage is not good. Dump station (just one) muddy and could use a larger concrete “curb” and some gravel. The host is a bit militant. Immediately came over after we arrived and told us to keep our dogs on a leash (they were already tied up. Beach area is nice. Has a fishing pier. It’s about a 2 mile walk on a trail to it or you can drive to it. We live in VA and camp at all the state parks. This state park in no way measures up to those.
ScoutThis was a nice, standard campground with a trail to the top of the mountain right in the campground loop. Bathrooms could use a good scrub, and the water took a good 5+ minutes to heat up. Overall a nice weekend trip location.

GuideThis campground is probably 90% big rigs. It’s a huge campground with 2 lakes, playground, RV store and shelter houses. There is only one shower house with one shower and two toilets on each side. Pet friendly on leash. Close to Mount Airy for those over 60 who want a trip down Memory Lane.

ScoutWe stayed for 9 nights and really enjoyed it at Oak Hollow. The campground is well maintained and several areas of the campground have beautiful views of the lake. Definitely will be back! Sites do require some leveling so just be prepared for that. But they clearly state this when you make a reservation.
LegendAfter freezing the night before, we decided we needed to get to a lower elevation and warm up. As soon as we had enough cell to check The Dyrt, we found this campground and called to inquire about one-night availability on a Wednesday in later October. Amanda was very friendly and accommodating and we secured a water site with water and electric for $28.
Different sites accommodate different length rigs ranging from 25’ to 40’. All sites have electric hookups, and some have sewer hookups as well. Since we arrived after the store closed, we paid the next morning.
The bathrooms/showers were clean. Didn’t use the shower so cannot comment on that. Sink faucets only had cold water but there was a diaper changing station and paper towels.
As far as activities, there is Disc golf, fishing, and boating. Boat rentals are available through the end of October, but it was a bit too chilly to consider doing this! There is a playground and a small zip line. There are also some hiking trails, but we did not explore them. There is a small camp store. There was surprisingly limited cell on Verizon.
The most desirable sites would be along the water (sites 31, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 43), but I would imagine that on a summer weekend, these would be challenging to secure. Second best would be the wooded sites (10, 19, 20). Least desirable would be the sites in the internal loops as these have little to no privacy. Note that site 44 is right next to the dump station. There are also some monthly rental sites.
This worked well for an overnight stay as we continued on down the road.
LegendWe are full-timers in a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow. We were in site B01 for 5 days in early October. The CG is on the lake, very clean, quiet and well maintained and the staff is very friendly. Watch out for the first set of speed bumps though- there is no sign and in dappled sunlight, they don’t stand out that well. Although they said they were going to put a sign in later this fall. The CG was full on the weekend. As others have said, many of the sites can be quite unlevel front to back. Even in B Section, which is really just one big gravel lot, our front wheels were 4-5 inches off of the ground. Section B sites are also very close together. Our awning came within 1 foot of the neighbor’s slide, as did the others in this section. Also, strangely, site B01 does not have its own water spigot, so you have to share one with B02.
AT&T coverage was decent, ranging from 1-3 bars of 5G with speeds varying from 0.7 to 2.7 MB/s. CG WiFi could reach 2-3 MB/s, but dropped out occasionally at night when the CG was full and most were on the network. We were able to get DISH coverage on all three western satellites at our site. We didn’t try to determine the OTA channels here.

The park is so beautiful. The sites are a little rough but easy to level your rig. The park has great trails around it, they can be pretty challenging when it comes to elevation gain. The lake is wonderful. They were updating cabins when we were there last, they look great. The showers were clean and the bathroom was the same. The host was a nice gentleman. No Verizon service or WiFi. We go here to get away.
GuideThis place is nice, but you will need to check your site to see if you will be able to get your rv level. I stayed at site C2 and my tongue was on the ground and I still wasn’t level. I even had both sets of wheels up on blocks to get the rear higher. Luckily I wasn’t too far out for my absorption refrigerator to function. The WiFi is iffy at best. We use a king booster and it would drop constantly and was slow when it was working. Verizon isn’t good here either. The lake is beautiful and the location is great. The staff was super nice and helpful.

They have classes for the children at the nature center. This park is all hands on, the staff ride around checking on folks and answering questions. Swimming area is first rate and the warmest clean waters that will make you forget the ocean.
