Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sound on one side, ocean on the other: Camp Hatteras RV Resort and Campground in Rodanthe occupies a narrow strip of the Outer Banks where the geography does most of the work. Sites along the sound sit yards from the water's edge, with westward sightlines that put sunset directly behind your rig. The ocean side is a short walk across the property. Sites are close together, so neighbors are part of the experience, but campers who land an end unit on the sound report a degree of separation that the interior sites don't provide.

The resort has a full amenity stack: indoor and outdoor pools, a jacuzzi, a playground, and mini golf. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are standard, and the staff draws consistent praise for being approachable and helpful at check-in. Cleanliness comes up repeatedly in reviews. "Clean, lots of amenities and super friendly staff," notes Mandy G.. The WiFi is weak enough that one reviewer recommends bringing a hotspot, and Verizon users report spotty coverage. AT&T performs better in the area.

A few practical notes worth knowing before arrival: sites are not pre-assigned, so specific locations aren't guaranteed even when booking a category like oceanfront. One reviewer paid a premium rate and found their assigned site further from the water than expected, with closer sites sitting vacant. Power outages have been reported. The south beach entrance has required repairs at times, so checking current access conditions before arrival makes sense.

Rates run $64 to $90 per night, with costs reflecting peak summer demand on this stretch of the Banks. Sarah A. sums up the sound-side draw well: "Sunset in your backyard." Pets are welcome. Reservations are available and advisable given how quickly sought-after spots fill during summer. Campers who want a different setup nearby can look at Rodanthe Watersports & Campground or the Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort for camping near Rodanthe.

Campers regularly cited the beachfront location and extensive amenities as major draws. Some noted concerns about tight site spacing, though most found the family-friendly atmosphere and ocean access worth it.

Beware-disappointed

Paid for oceanfront and got site 38 which is further away from ocean than second row- only to see 2-3 front row sites set empty our entire weekend. They do not assign sites until arrival. Lost power for a few hours on entire campground first night and it was 82 degrees - no email or message as to what was happening. Then headed to the south beach entrance only to find it boarded up for repairs-I’m still chill-until I go to take a shower on Sunday morning at 0930 and I was locked out while it was being cleaned. Unpleasant and disappointing for $155+\night

Small sites

All the amenities at the price of privacy. Stray cats, fed by campers drove our dog crazy.

Spot 380 the way to go!

We got in during a tight time of year in the most sought after spot…and we understand why it is!!! Right on the sand just yards away from the water on the sound side. Sunset in your backyard. Was definitely breezy but perfect to bring the heat down a little. Super chill campground with amenities nearby. The internet is terrible so if you’re working from home, have a hotspot. AT&T does much better in this area. We have Verizon and it was spotty. No streaming capability, but that makes for a tech free in the moment experience! You are right on top of your neighbor, but it still feels private, especially if you get the end unit. However, if you don’t want the entire campground of people near your site at sunset, don’t ask for a sound site on the end :)

On the beach

Easy access to beach, space for kids to play, bath houses and laundry are good (for a beach area) clean, quiet and inexpensive compared to surrounding campgrounds.

My Stay

I had a great site right next to the dunes. I could hear the pounding of the surf from my van. Only a minute to get to the beach. It was worth coming all the way out here!
