Wind off the Pamlico Sound defines the atmosphere at Camp Hatteras before you even unhitch. This large private campground in Rodanthe sits on both sides of Highway 12, with sites on the Atlantic-facing side separated from the beach by sand dunes and a boardwalk, and sound-front sites facing west across open water. Reviewers consistently describe it as one of the largest campgrounds on the Outer Banks, with roughly 400 sites spread across both sections. No shade to speak of exists anywhere on the property, so arriving with a good awning setup matters.
The two sides of the campground offer genuinely different experiences. Sound-front sites give campers open sightlines toward the Pamlico Sound and direct sunset views, plus access to the water for paddleboarding, though recent erosion-control rockwork along the shore has made launching kayaks and paddleboards more difficult and typically requires two or three people. Beach-side sites sit closer to the Atlantic but are buffered by dunes, meaning most do not have a direct ocean view from the site itself. Sites throughout are on concrete pads and run close together. Heather S. notes the campground "really packs you in," and several reviewers flag that site labeling, particularly for premium sound-front spots, does not always match what you see on arrival.
Amenities are extensive for a private campground. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are available, along with a dump station, laundry facilities, a game room, miniature golf, tennis and basketball courts, a dog park with an obstacle course, and a catch-and-release fishing pond. Bathhouses draw consistent praise. As Bruce B. puts it, "facilities were clean and well equipped." Note that fire rings are not provided, and any brought-in fire pit must be elevated off the ground. WiFi on-site is unreliable from individual sites.
Camp Hatteras runs $32 to $130 per night depending on site type and season, with additional daily fees for pets, extra adults, and cable. The campground stays busy through summer, with peak weeks feeling crowded throughout. Nags Head, roughly 30 miles north, covers grocery and supply runs. For campers comparing options, Oregon Inlet Campground at Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Rodanthe Watersports & Campground offer alternatives in the area with different tradeoffs on cost and amenities. Book well in advance for July and August, and consider shoulder-season timing in late spring or early December if crowds and cost are concerns.
