Hikers looking to swim or fish in the Catskills can reach Echo Lake via a hike-in trail through the Indian Head Wilderness, where free dispersed camping rings the shoreline. Sites are relatively flat and well shaded with trees, with one lean-to near the trailhead and additional spots scattered along overgrown side paths. Arrive early. Later in the day the lake draws enough visitors that noise can carry into the evening. The lakeshore edge tends to get swampy, so bug spray and long pants are worth packing. Those exploring camping near Indian Head Wilderness will find nearby options at Devil's Kitchen Lean-to, about 1.4 miles north.
