Bluewater Lake State Park Campground

About

State Park

Welcome to Bluewater Lake State Park Campground, nestled near Prewitt, NM. This spot is a gem for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy some peace and quiet. The campground is open from April 1 to October 31, offering a range of accommodations including tent sites, RV spots, and even cabins.

One of the standout features here is the stunning lake views. Most campsites offer at least a glimpse of the lake, and some have a breathtaking panoramic view. The lake itself is a beautiful sight, especially at sunrise and sunset. Just be aware that the water can sometimes be affected by blue-green algae, but it still makes for a picturesque backdrop.

The campground is pretty well-equipped. You’ll find electric hookups at some sites, though they can be limited, so plan accordingly. There are also drinking water stations, toilets, and showers available, although the shower house might be closed at times. If you’re traveling with a big rig, you’ll be pleased to know that the campground is big-rig friendly with some large, level pull-through sites.

Wildlife is part of the charm here. You might spot wild horses roaming through the campground, which adds a unique touch to your stay. There are also good trails for hiking, and if you’re into fishing, the lake offers catch-and-release opportunities for Tiger Muskie.

Visitors have mentioned that the campground is generally quiet and well-maintained, with clean restrooms and a family-friendly atmosphere. Just keep an eye out for horse droppings and some occasional trash. Overall, Bluewater Lake State Park Campground is a fantastic spot to relax, enjoy nature, and maybe even catch a glimpse of those wild horses.

WINDY

Campgrounds easy to access.  I did not have a site reservation, buit there were lots of vacent pads available.   Nice view of the lake.   Only drawback was the all night  incessant  winds.  They were strong, gusty and loud.  So strong they collapsed my tent on top of me. Notmuch sleep that night.  It might have been where I was (pad 44),  They were still strong in the morning, but I noticed they were less/non existant at the campsites near the main entrance.  Just bewaye and be prepared.

Nice find

Great campground. Not far off I-40. Lots of sites. Most have a level, gravel tent pad, table and fire ring. Vault toilets in abundance. One bathroom with sinks and flush toilets. Separate shower house was closed when we were here. Some electric sites. Some large level pull thrus. Most sites have at least a glimpse of the lake. There were horses roaming through the campground. Mostly empty this April midweek. Good trails for hiking. I only saw one water pump in the park. There is an EV charging station.

Nice State Park

The campsites are nice but not very level. If you're coming after November you need to be here before 5:00 or the gates are locked. The water was very infected with blue green algae but also very pretty. The hikes are nice because the water is low you can walk all the way around the lake almost. Not very many electric sites but inexpensive if you get one.

Nice camp

Various campsite types at this lakeside park. Most are non electric but I got an electric site as it was hot. A few trails and a nice family atmosphere. Unfortunately lake was choked with algae (seasonal) so I didn’t swim. Also some trash around. Good prices and sites though.

Pretty NM Sunset

Area is very well maintained! Restrooms and showers were immaculate.

Watch out for the wild horses and their droppings.

Plenty of spots if you’re sleeping in a hammock.

Great park Limited level sites

If I offered s as my advise, check the fires before committing. Limited electric sites. I think more than 60% of sites were not level. We’re self-leveling but took site B - dry camping, level and fitted between 2 ADA sites. We loved being so remote. Verizon/Visible/ Starlink all worked great

Great staff. Patrolled by rangers frequently, so felt safe

Pretty scenic and Wild Horses

Lake was muddy brown, not blue. First come, first served and we arrived before noon, but no electric sites were available. Views of lake and surrounding juniper covered mesas was good. Early in morning horses grazed right through our campsite.

Another hidden gem

This place was fantastic. The rates are dirt cheap, but the park is worth many times more. I came in without a reservation and found a huge pull-through campsite on the hill, with a clear view of the lake (it is indeed blue). There was a deep and broad terrace for picnic table and tent, and some pines for shade. It was a little windy when I visited, but not uncomfortably so. It was dark and quiet at night, and I slept well.

The bathroom nearest my campsite was a vault toilet, but a clean one. Real bathrooms are available at the visitor center, a long walk north of my tent.

I recommend following the trail at the north end of the campground for a nice view of the dam (it was a 10 to 15 minute hike for me, narrow but level). The lake is also open for boating and fishing, with a launch ramp near the campground.

The only downside I can think of was the trash I found at my campsite, mostly bottle caps. I spent a few minutes picking it up before I left.

Camped under a ridiculous amount of stars

In was a dreamy March evening, Colton, Elliot, and Ed drove in to Bluewater lake state park at 9:30 PM. It was post staff hours but we were allowed to park outside and do an easy, flat hike into the camp site. Lots of clean, empty sites, plus clean bathroom . The campsite numbers were hard to find but it’s chill. Got super cold during this time of year at night, so come ready with hats, gloves, and sleeping pads.

Great campground in January!

So we were very lucky that we decided to check out this campground, it is absolutely gorgeous! There was not a single other camper here so we got a nice level spot with power. It was a bit cold, got down to 15, there was some leftover snow in some spots but nothing that was a problem. Last night something was bugging the dogs so I looked outside to see a herd of wild horses grazing next to our camper! There are lots of good hiking trails. The water is still on here and the dump stations are open if needed.

Easy off the 40. Sites are a little close for me. Only vault toilets are open. Only around 15 electric sites and most aren't level. But the views and sunsets are beautiful. The water is nice. Only 5 other campers here. Paid $14.00. Well worth that.

Very nice park & camping area. Wild horses & jack rabbits present. We dispersed & parked our truck camper right on the shoreline for $8. The hook up sites over looked the water (paved pad, pavilion, fire ring, 30&50 amp electric) bathrooms, showers, dump station. Boat ramp. Nice Pike and Muskie for the anglers.

Quiet and beautiful

We stayed away from lake because of our dogs. They tend to bark if people go by. The space was nice but the sites were too close for us. I preferred more space for privacy but we’re new to RVing, so perhaps this is normal. Park Ranger was very nice and helped us settle in. The view to the canyon and hills was beautiful. I’m not sure we’ll stay again because we’d like more space and water hookups. But other than that, it was a beautiful spot!

Beautiful and peaceful

This is a wonderful campground. Our site (A) was perfectly level on a concrete pad. The site came with a large fire ring conveniently located in the rear part of the concrete pad and a picnic table covered with a roofed shelter. The site was clean, spacious, and even though it was not a lake side site, it had a beautiful view of the lake. Right now I’m watching a mix of snow and rain create a misty and magical landscape. My Verizon service varies from 2 - 4 bars. I would definitely stay here again!!!

Lakefront camping

Uncrowded when we were there State park located right on a man-made lake. unfortunately, the lake level is extremely low! Decent sites each with picnic table and fire pit some with shade canopies others with a little natural tree cover, not a lot of privacy. Pit toilets, no drinking water available except at maybe the RV sites with hookups and at the pump outstation? Weak cell signal. Seems more suited for RV's.

Road Trip Gem

Found this campsite heading west on I-40 on a memorial day weekend road trip last minute. Had 40 designated campsites with about 1/2 reservable online and 1/2 first come first serve. They also allow dispersed camping along the lake and there were probably 50+ groups of people in RVs and trailers comfortably spaced.

Wild horses roaming around the lake were also pretty cool.

We took a designated campsite overlooking the lake and added this park to the list of places to return to.

Great state run campground with options from primitive to full hook ups at great prices. The primitive camping is all along the lake so you can park and walk right in with your canoe or SUP. Playground for the kiddos, lots of areas to explore with the puppers, and plenty of bathrooms and Ramadas available for day use. Boat ramp for those so inclined and good fishing for any anglers out there. The staff running the camp were so enthusiastic and friendly, you’ll want to plan a trip back ASAP.

Bluewater Lake SP is a unique campground in regards to the layout. You can pull up to all of the sites, and you can overlook the lake, be on the lake, be a little further away, private, have neighbors, really what ever you want. Checking in was very easy and the folks were quite nice. Also there were random horses and donkey’s walking around??? So that was a fun surprise.
