To begin please be careful of the roads as they very sandy and you can get stuck easily if you don't have a 4x4, that being said I made it in and out with a 2 wheel drive truck but I almost got stuck. If come in by cell tower there are two roads to the right one goes south one goes east towards the mountain we went east and camped in the dry riverbed where the road first gets close, much past that you really need a 4x4 I went down the road but barley made it out by where the graffiti is the parking area on Amboy rd.
So this is a beautiful area with plenty of wildlife and areas to hike. Due east the cell tower behind a small hill is a camper trailer that looks like it's been there for quite some time, there is somebody that lives there so don't approach it because I believe his cheese slid of the cracker. He would come out at random times and just laugh in a very creepy manner. If you look on google earth you can see it. I think it was his way of telling us to stay away. So we did. This is dispersed camping so there are no amenities.
This is a great place to dig for white opals! I come here several times a year to dig for opals and search for other rock, there is a ton of chalcedony in this area which I like. The dirt roads are okay but not great as far as how rough they are, but you don't have to have a 4x4 so that's good. There's quite a few spots and they are spaced far apart, I've seen a wide range of camping setups, I tent camp so I tend to look for dry creak beds, this area is pretty rocky so air mattresses are your friend.
In the deeper areas of old river beds the hills will be 15-30ft tall, look for a dark green/gray line and when you find whites spots that's where the opals are, you can chip away and find decent sized veins of white opal. When you get them wet you will see blue, red, green and yellow amongst other colors.
This is dispersed camping so there are no amenities to speak of, but there is a small town of Tecopa near by with a few small places to eat. There are also hot springs in this area follow the signs they are everywhere, be forewarned that foreigners come into this area as well and tend to go into the hot springs nude. There is another camp close to the hot springs that has amenities if that's what you like.
This area can be very deceiving, as to where you can camp because of the petroglyphs (once you pass the main signs) this is a protected area. So if you come from Vegas and your at the little white trailer which is the main entrance you'll have to hike to the south side if the mountains and exit the main path area before camping (which is about 6-7 miles, so what I do is drive south on Vegas Blvd right before you reach Seven Magic Mountain on the left side you will see a white sign, if your coming from the north hang a left there and stay left on the asphalt until you go over cattle grate, once you go over the grate keep looking left until you see a "brown stick sign" (about a half mile) leading you to the trail head. There is a circle parking area, I park there and then camp in the dry riverbed before entering past the main big sign, about a quarter mile from circle parking area. All that being said don't try driving a car through the back rounds, dirt roads are rough. One down side to this area is right after you go over the cattle grate you will see spots on the right and left where people setup on shoot weapons. If you like that then your in the perfect area but I get annoyed because they tend to go kind of late into the night. So from the big dirt road (once you see brown stick sign) I go north about 5 miles
So many areas to explore, the scenery is flat-out ridiculous. The dirt roads are very well maintained, this is a dream area for those of you that like dispersed camping. Be careful how you enter this area Google tried to direct me right through the mountains and it was impossible with the two wheel drive truck. Off of 318 make sure you pass Gap Mountain and enter is a left, if you're coming in from the south you can take seaman wash Road if you up for beautiful drive even though its a dirt road. The area is basically Basin & Range National Monument. Tons of things to explore, on the Seaman wash road entrance there are really cool maps that will show you how many things there are to see.
This is one of my favorite places on this planet, dark sky's make it great for watching meteor showers.
