      Cloudcroft, New Mexico

We are a family operated business in the heart of historic Wooten Canyon. Once known as the final water stop for the Cloud Climbing Railroad, last operated in 1938. Now Wooten park is a picturesque place rich with various fruit trees. A warm inviting getaway with breath-taking mountain views. We have refurbished the historic cabin and have instated a RV park for those who would like to come enjoy the crisp air of the Rocky Mountains. You may hear elk bugling throughout the mountains or see a deer passing through the park. Our RV site is a short drive from the historic village of Cloudcroft. We wish to communicate the beauty and history to everyone who stays here in the Land of Enchantment.

          Loved this KOA

Local to everything in Alamogordo. Propane available, laundry, cabins, hot as hell showers, water pressure is really high at around 155 psi. So definitely bring a regulator. Two KOA cats that are friendly so FYI

          Helpful service

I messed up thinking I had booked this campground - I hadn’t. It was five minutes to seven pm and the staff called me back and got me a site for less than $50 for the night. It was a nice, level pull through site with water/sewer/cable/electric. I was pretty relieved that we would have somewhere to camp - no one else picked up their phones.

We didn’t arrive until nearly nine and the same staff person was still working - helping someone back into their site. She was very kind and welcoming.

The next morning I checked out the campground. The area was pretty industrial, but less than two minutes to the science museum and zoo. Individual spaces were generous (especially the tent sites - they would fit any tent size) and I liked the little patio we had. The playground was newish, the pool looked like it would be nice when filled, the laundry room looked great (but cash only - I prefer the card ones) and there was a lovely store and rec room. There were also showers and a small dog run.

This KOA had everything you could need - including excellent customer service.

20-25 minutes to White Sands National Monument.

          Yikes!

STAY FAR AWAY!!! This place was a nightmare. Over priced cheapy dirty lodging ran by a old men frat boys. The cabin was not as listed. It's a SHARED cabin with the owner although listed(and priced) as a private cabin. Listed as family friend yet we got a complaint that our kids noise was excessive from INSIDE of the cabin. The cabin comes with no view and lots of attitude. Decorated with cheap tacky prints in goodwill frames with price tags on every single one. The"maintenance guy" came onto the property on our 1st morning to yell at us and treat us like children over the fire pit we used the night before. He came trying to intimidate us, threatening that we are going to be charged for excessive damage, at the very start of our stay. There is NO communication here. No instructions, no checkout or checkin information, nothing. We placed a log on a propane firepit because we were supplied a nearly empty propane tank, and were unaware we could burn a log on it. Again, no information about ANYTHING anywhere inside or out. just an inaccurate map. Once he saw we were recording this, he sped off in his truck yelling"I'm taking away your fire privileges". We spent our Saturday morning cleaning out that firepit with our bare hands, it looked and functioned 10x better than when we arrived. Not my idea of vacationing! So we didn't mess with it the remainder of our 2 days there. We came for the view and campfire, both we didn't get to experience here. Went to talk to the owner after the maintenance man drama and he could care less and then sat there blaming us for excessive noise from my kids(sorry that you CHOOSE to live in the same cabin you rent), parking in"his driveway" for a few hours last night(again, you chose this life bud), and saying stupid things like,"wheres your realtors license"(huh?!?!). Biggest waste of money ever. There's a reason there are no pictures. Map advertises the other cabin is private and seperated, NOPE, shared cabin. Pictures are of the"amazing view", aka the owners junky backyard and a crappy doghouse(which we were scolded for turning on the light of). STAY ELSEWHERE, TRUST ME!

Bonito Hollow RV Park & Campground

          Nice park, friendly hosts

I was looking to get away from the heat in Albuquerque and maybe even do a little fishing. I picked a site next to the upper river (Rio Bonito). The water was clear and moving, but no sign of any fish. The river is more of a creek (expected for New Mexico), but still pretty. It was barely visible from my camp, but just a short hike away. No ATT or Verizon cell service at my site, but I did find a weak signal up near the office. The wifi was a struggle. It was barely adequate the first day, but absolutely miserable the second day. I could easily connect to their router, but constantly got an error of “no internet service” and had to log off and on several times. I had limited shade at my site, but thankfully the AC kept the trailer cool enough, as it was nearly 90 degrees outside. The hosts were very nice and the park is kept pretty clean. No tents allowed, though.

          Perfect little gem

Super friendly owners. A beautiful and picturesque location in the Sacramento mountains. Easy in and out just a few miles from the village of Cloudcroft in the heart of the Lincoln National Forest. On property hiking trail, and an excellent common areas. Fruit trees abound, and picking fruit is allowed in season. They also have a cabin with multiple rental rooms. Full RV hookups and wifi at very reasonable rates. It is close to the road, but traffic is minimal at night. They are open year round!

          It sure is a KOA!

We spent three days in December here as a basecamp for White Sands. Everything was what we expected, and the cost per night is just about right. It's a solid option, but we'll probably look for something a bit wilder the next time we're in town. I'd recommend this to anyone who needs full hookups, needs to stay close to town, or gets KOA discounts.

KOAs are a go to on the road

KOAs tend to be a go to chain for me. They usually offer similar amenities between locations and good prices. I should probably consider becoming a member. This KOA was great. They had spotlights at each tent pad that you could turn on and adjust where they point. This made my nighttime arrival set up experience so much smoother. I'm pretty skilled at night time set up at this point, but having light always makes things move faster when you're solo. Each tent site also had a water spicket and 1 or 3 tables. The tent sites are huge and can fit any tent I've ever seen. Close to white sands national park. They also offer sleds you can borrow for free and wax for a $1 deposit. I highly recommend going there and sledding. Be aware of the weather/season because the sand will be hot during the day in the summer months

          Quiet, great location, well kept

We received a call about 10 minutes prior to our arrival to ensure we knew where they are located. Upon arrival we were greeted and escorted to our site and advised on hookups. The site we had was#32 and was a gravel pull-thru and almost level. The bathrooms and showers were close by and very clean. Water pressure was great and 30amp is what we need. The Wi-Fi was so good I didn’t bother to connect my range extender. When I hooked up to Cable, I had no connection. They came over right away to check it out and helped me determine it was an issue inside my trailer. They were quite helpful. Since it is after Labor Day the campground was not busy, and they did a great job of keeping us spread out. It was very quiet and relaxing.

          Eagle Creek Mescalero Cabins

A good, open Mescalero alternative to the closed Lincoln NF

We tent camped at Eagle Lake aka Eagle Creek campground on the Mescalero Apache Reservation over Memorial Day weekend 2022. The surrounding Lincoln National Forest was closed because of extreme fire risk, so there were very few places to camp in the Sacramento Mountains and escape the heat of El Paso. We used camp stoves because of a fire ban. We camped among the pine trees in the first tent area. There were clean porta-johns in that area. The showers and permanent bathroom were located up in the RV park about a 3-mile round trip walk on the road from the first tent area, so it’s more practical to drive to the showers. The permanent bathrooms and showers were clean.

Very pretty scenery, surrounded by mountain ridges and peaks and pine forest. There were two small lakes and a small creek flowing through the campground.

The campground format is kind of laissez faire because there aren’t assigned sites and it’s first come, first serve. The first tent area seemed about half full and we found a good site. We didn’t scout the second tent area because the host said there weren’t as many trees there. The first tent site was developed on a forested slope albeit they built flat rectangular-like terraces into the slope where you can pitch a tent(s) and park your vehicle(s).

Eagle Creek, near Ruidoso, had a similar feel to the Mescalero Nation’s Silver Lake campground near Cloudcroft, but Eagle Creek had a more quiet vibe. The main drawback was the 10:00 am checkout time, but we were still able to cook up some breakfast burritos as we broke camp. Good times.

Update 6/22/2022: At some point after my review, the Dyrt deleted the actual campground, which is where the road forks and moved my review to the nearby and similarly named RV resort, which is totally different. I love the Dyrt and I’m a pro ranger but sometimes c’mon man.

Does not accept Sprinter camper vans

We are traveling with our Sprinter camper van and tried to make a reservation there, based on the very positive reviews. Unfortunately, we were told, that their insurance does not allow these kinds of campers to stay in their park. I had to send the pictures of the inside and outside of our van before they decided that we can't stay there. I have no clue, what problem the insurance has with Mercedes Sprinter vans, so just a heads up.

One of the best for a KOA

I normally don’t stay in improved campgrounds like KOA, but passing through Alamogordo I wanted a stop where we could be in town with internet access and get some maintenance done. The location is perfect, right in town. The park itself is quiet, but there is some train noise and traffic noise from the surrounding area as expected. The grounds are clean and well kept, the bathroom and showers are clean, and the laundry is a nice addition. Staff is impeccably friendly and helpful. Wonderful place; would stay here again.
