With reservations available for $40 per night, Mesa Top Camping accommodates RVs up to 27 feet on a mesa-top location accessed via a steep, bumpy road that requires careful navigation. The drive-in campground provides toilets, picnic tables, and firewood for sale, with campfires and pets both welcome on the property.
Campers occupy spacious sites with eastward-facing views across the mesa landscape, with some spots offering shade beneath juniper trees. The elevated position creates sufficient privacy for outdoor showers, while clean outhouses serve the camping area. Multiple reviewers mention the site's proximity to Madrid, a nearby artsy town that campers explore on foot or by bicycle. Brent J. noted the campground's position "on a windswept mesa with sweeping eastward views," while also highlighting the "quirky, whimsical cemetery" and short hike to Madrid.
Host Kim provides on-site assistance, meeting late arrivals and helping campers locate their designated spots. Cell service reaches the mesa, and alcohol is permitted throughout the campground. The access road presents challenges for some vehicles, with one reviewer specifically mentioning their 27-foot Class C RV made the climb successfully despite the steep grade. For additional camping options in the region, campers can explore campsites near Santo Domingo Pueblo.
Description
The campsite is 0.9 miles off highway 14 in the historic town of Madrid and up to the mesa. Site 1 "The edge" is great for RV's and tall setups as well as tents and cars. The hill going to the site is short, approx. 0.2 ml. Its dirt and rock and a little steep but everything from bikes, motorcycles, sedans and buses can easily navagate without bottoming out, just take it slow. It has beautiful mesa views with plenty of privacy and a nice outhouse within 50 yards. Madrid and sister village, Cerrillos are loaded with places to explore on foot or by other means. Both towns are very rich in history, from past ocean existance to Native American civilizations, silver and gold mining to booming wartime coalmining industries, to ghost towns.
