The sound of Route 302 traffic carries through much of Crawford Notch Campground, particularly affecting sites near the entrance where RV hookups and cabins cluster. This Hart's Location campground spreads across forested terrain along the Saco River, operating from mid-May through mid-October with sites ranging from full-hookup RV spots to walk-in tent areas deeper in the woods.
Tent campers find quieter conditions along the river corridor, where sites like the coveted #55 sit directly on the Saco's banks. Jamie C. describes the experience: "You don't feel like you're at a campground here." The river runs low enough for tubing during typical conditions, with swimming holes accessible downstream. Several reviewers mention catching trout from the campground's water access points.
Sixty acres of trails wind through the property, connecting to broader hiking networks in the White Mountains region. The on-site general store stocks basic supplies, breakfast items, and alcohol, proving especially valuable given the lack of cell service throughout most of the campground. Bathhouses with showers sit near the entrance, while portable toilets serve the more remote tent areas.
Site assignments can change without notice, according to multiple reviews, and dust from the gravel roads becomes noticeable during dry periods. Reservations book months ahead for prime riverfront spots, though walk-ins occasionally benefit from last-minute cancellations. Kathy L. notes "lots of walking trails, including along the stream." Wildlife encounters, including bears and moose, occur regularly enough that food storage precautions are essential.
Crawford Notch Campground works best for campers who prioritize river access and don't mind road noise, especially those securing tent sites away from the main entrance area.
