Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this drive-in campground sits east of Moorhead Road across a river bridge in Custer National Forest. The site provides roughly 10 camping spots with fire rings, cement picnic tables, and one outhouse. A spout delivers spring water, though campers should bring their own drinking water as a precaution.
Access requires careful planning since the northern bridge on Moorhead Road has closed to vehicles due to safety concerns. Visitors must approach via the western Powder River Road route instead. The campground accommodates both tent campers and large RVs, with cliffs rising along the southern and eastern boundaries. Diamond Butte Lookout provides another camping option 13 miles north for those exploring the region.
Description
Located next to the Powder River, this site contains a semi-developed, yet primitive, campground popular for fall hunting camps, but beautiful to camp in year round. BLM managed lands are nearby providing hunting and many other recreational activities. Moorhead Campground is also a Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) that has become a very popular area for many recreationists seeking to get away from it all!
