A heavily graded gravel road leads into Loch Leven Fishing Access Site, a small Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks campground on the Yellowstone River outside Livingston. Sites run $12 per night with a Montana Fishing License or $18 without, and the campground fills on weekends and holiday periods, so arriving early matters. No water spigots or trash cans are on-site; campers pack everything in and out, and food must be stored in a bear-proof container or vehicle.
The Yellowstone River is the defining feature here. Several sites sit directly on the bank, and those go first. The current runs fast, and a public boat ramp at the end of the campground draws steady traffic from early morning onward, which is worth knowing before booking a riverside site. Shade is minimal across most of the grounds, and wind can be persistent, especially through the afternoon. One reviewer who tented for a week noted that a durable, well-structured tent is necessary given the conditions.
Fishing and floating are the primary draws. Campers report active aquatic insect life, including caddisfly and stonefly, though catches vary. Mallard's Rest and Spire Peak Campground are both within two miles to the north, giving anglers working this stretch of the Yellowstone additional staging options. Views from camp look toward Chico Peak and the surrounding valley. "Opening our doors to the Yellowstone River each morning was magnificent," notes Laura H.
The vault toilet draws consistent praise. Cell coverage is limited, particularly for T-Mobile and AT&T users. The campground is ADA accessible and accommodates RVs up to 50 feet. Paradise Fishing Access Site lies a few miles south along the river for those wanting a backup or a second night option. Campers planning a summer visit should arrive by Thursday evening to secure one of the riverside sites before the weekend crowd.
