Beautiful Overnight!

Stopped at lone tree on the way to Missoula. A nice little campground with a well maintained road and level parking. There is no shade but each camp site has a shade structure, picnic table, and fire pit. I got a nice spot with a direct view of the reservoir. We had fun walking along the lake and splashing around❤️

Where the Wild Things Are

From BLM website; Centered around a single, sentinel Ponderosa Pine tree, this small campground features six campsites and a group use area. Across the Crooked River, the photogenic Rocky Canyon and it’s vertical rimrock cliffs offer photographers a variety of ever-changing light and depth perspectives.

The three nights I spent here in late July changed my life. The solitude and gurgling of Crooked River stayed constant as the hot sun slowly turned into the Milky Way. Bring water for drinking and plenty of bug spray

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reserve a spot at Lone Tree Campground?

Lone Tree Campground appears to operate on a first-come, first-served basis rather than taking reservations. For the most accurate and up-to-date reservation information, contact the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office that manages the site. Given its small size of only six campsites, arriving early during peak periods is recommended to secure a spot.

What amenities are available at Lone Tree Campground?

Lone Tree Campground offers six campsites plus a group use area centered around a single Ponderosa Pine tree. Each campsite features a shade structure, picnic table, and fire pit, which are particularly valuable since natural shade is limited. The campground provides level parking areas with well-maintained access roads. While basic, the campground's facilities are designed to enhance the outdoor experience while overlooking the scenic reservoir and nearby Rocky Canyon with its vertical rimrock cliffs.

What fishing opportunities are available near Lone Tree Campground at Clark Canyon Reservoir?

Clark Canyon Reservoir offers excellent fishing opportunities directly accessible from Lone Tree Campground. Campers can enjoy fishing along the shoreline within walking distance of their sites, with direct lake access from the campground. The reservoir is known for its fishing opportunities, making it a popular destination for anglers. For specific information about fish species, fishing regulations, and licenses, check with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks before your visit.

What is the best time of year to visit Lone Tree Campground?

Late spring through early fall is generally the best time to visit Lone Tree Campground. Summer provides warm weather for enjoying the reservoir, though the limited natural shade makes the provided shade structures especially valuable during hot days. Fall offers milder temperatures and potentially less crowded conditions. Weather can change quickly in Montana, so come prepared with appropriate gear regardless of when you visit. Winter access may be limited or unavailable due to typical Montana mountain weather conditions.
