Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA

Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA operates year-round just outside Lawrence, accommodating RVs up to 65 feet with full hookups alongside tent sites that include water and electric connections. The campground sits close enough to active train tracks that locomotives pass every 20-30 minutes throughout the night, with horns audible across all camping areas. Angie S. notes the facility "is clean and well kept," though several reviewers mention the frequent train noise as a significant factor in their stay.

Sites pack closely together with limited privacy between neighbors. Tent campers face particular challenges with uneven ground on some sites and minimal shade coverage across the camping areas. The shower facilities feature notably small changing areas that reviewers estimate at roughly 18 by 24 inches. Myron C. points out "the good things about the sites are that they have water and electricity" along with night lights and device charging stations at each spot.

Family amenities include a swimming pool, playground, and dog park where pets can exercise off-leash. The bathhouse receives consistent praise for cleanliness, though accessibility features are limited with spring-loaded doors and steps at entrances. Laundry facilities operate on-site for longer stays. Staff members earn frequent mentions for helpfulness and friendly service throughout the check-in process and during visits.

The campground serves as a convenient highway stop for travelers, positioned about 35-40 minutes from Kansas City. Sites remain level for most RV setups, though tent campers should inspect their assigned spot for tire ruts or uneven ground before setting up. Reservations are available for guaranteed placement during busy travel seasons.

For additional camping options in the area, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Kansas City sits less than half a mile southeast. Pack earplugs if you're sensitive to nighttime noise from passing freight trains.

Many campers appreciated the clean facilities, helpful staff, and excellent family amenities at this KOA. Train noise throughout the night was consistently noted as problematic, and pricing was considered high by some visitors.

A great little KOA campground with lots of amenities.

The staff is very nice, the camp is clean the bathrooms are clean the laundry is clean the pool is clean overall a very pleasant little camp. Please see attached video and pictures for more details.

The only two negatives are one there are probably not enough shade trees and two there is a train that comes by every couple of hours.

Good for a night while traveling

This is a good place for a night while on the road. The staff were great! They have a pool & plenty of activities. They do pack you in like sardines. And the bathrooms are not handicapped accessible. I have some mobility challenges, the door to the bathroom is on a VERY tight spring, there is a step up into it. And none of the stalls have grab bars.

Campground Too Close to the Railroad Tracks

Most KOA campgrounds I have been to are exceptional with great sites for all types of camping. However, there are a couple of them that have one or two sites that leave you scratching your head. We were supposed to camp at site 18, but it was not level and had tire ruts all the way to the back of the site. There was nowhere to set up our tent without it being uncomfortable throughout the night. With that said, we moved over to site 19, which was level. The tent sites are small for the tenters and there is little to no shade.

The good things about the sites are that they have water and electricity. There is even a night light and a place to charge your electronic devices. There is a fire ring but no lantern hanger.

The bath house is modern and up to date; however, the shower dressing area has got to be the smallest I have EVER seen at a campground. I estimated the dressing area to be about 18” x 24”. I’m not a math whiz, but even I can figure out that an average sized person would have difficulty moving around in the dressing area.

I might give it a higher rating if we were camping in an RV or even in our teardrop camper, but another problem was the noise. I was warned that there would be a train passing through, and the person I spoke to offered to throw in a pair of ear plugs and a night mask. Now I know why. There was a light from a nearby cabin lighting the whole tenting area, and the trains were one right behind the other… ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!! Every thirty minutes or so(could have been every twenty minutes, but I’m not sure), a train passed by. It wouldn’t be so bad, but it was LOUD!!!!!!!

We were on our way to Colorado, and the next time we are passing through, I will make sure to skip this campground.

Great family campground and awesome dog park!

It’s not the best I’ve ever been to, but it’s a as great family campground with beautiful views. We travel with two adorable rescues and appreciated the awesome dog park where they could run a bit. The restrooms are adequate and clean. Views are beautiful as you will see for yourself. Would definitely return. Tastes are $56-60

Good KOA but...TRAINS!

This is a good KOA but the trains run ALL NIGHT long. I only go to KOA if I am camping with the kids. It is worth the price if only because of the clean bathrooms and kid friendly activities.

Trains all night

This is a lovely campsite but we’ll sadly never stay here again - because trains passed by really loudly all night long - it finally stopped at about 5am. 🤬 We stayed on a Friday night

Nice stop with amenities

I’m in my 30s traveling solo and this stop was a great place to regroup and take advantage of their amenities like shower, laundry, etc. The bathrooms were clean and the staff was very friendly. If you are traveling with kids this is a terrific place to stop because there are lots of things to keep kids busy like a playground and pool. The sites aren’t very private and road noise from the nearby highway can be heard throughout the night if you’re tent camping but it didn’t really bother me.

Nice quiet park

We missed a KOA in Kansas City because of construction. Went to Lawrence KOA instead. Glad for the misfortune. The park has all you need for short or long term camping and RV trips.
