Durfee Creek, Superior Hiking Trail

This hike-in campsite along the Superior Hiking Trail requires backpackers to carry gear to reach the established tent pads and fire ring. The US Forest Service maintains basic facilities including toilets, and campfires are permitted with pets welcome. Hikers access the site after passing through previously logged hillsides that offer views toward Lake Superior and surrounding peaks.

The campsite sits slightly uphill from Durfee Creek, requiring a short walk to reach water for filtering. Tent pads spread across the area with a standard fire pit, though seating becomes limited when the group site fills. One reviewer noted the site functions well but lacks immediate water access and scenic views from camp itself. Nearby Woods Creek Camping provides another trail option for hikers continuing their Superior Hiking Trail journey.

One of the few group sites on the SHT

Heading NOBO on the SHT out of the Woods Creek campsite we came up out of the forest into some previously logged hillsides that have a prairie like appearance and some of the most amazing views of Lake Superior, Pincushion Mtn and Five Mile Rock. Past the open sloped field you head back into the trees and come upon Durfee Creek, labeled only by a group campsite sign. The site is slightly off the creek so it’s a quick walk past the site to reach the creek for water. The tent pads are spread out and the fire pit is normal sized so if the site is full seating will be at a premium. Overall the site is serviceable but lacks easy water access and views.
