    Good

Many campers have enjoyed the swimming beach and the nearby boat launch, making it easy to get out on the water. Solar  As one happy camper noted,“The beach area for swimming in Lake Independence is nice with a pavilion, volleyball, and ping pong nearby.”

    Campers beware

Van Riper State park has very unlevel sites with no water and 30 amp service. Unacceptable with today’s campers. Time to update Michigan

    Great campgeound

We are not a big state park fan as, in Michigan, there are very close sites and tons of noise. This one was relatively quiet. The site were the standard Michigan close but the campgeound was t full and there many options to choose from. The lake is real nice and the beach area is clean, spacious and it has a general store that has firewood for sale. We first reserved a rustic site, then changed to an electrical hook up site after arriving. The ranger was very accomodating.

    Serenaded by snoring

I’m a very simple camper used to having space and quiet…this was not the best time to pass through for an overnight. I arrived and the campground was so loud with people and kids shouting. There is zero privacy (they pack you in) so be sure to get a spot along the edge where you’ll at least have trees. I was very surprised and grateful how respectful everyone was of the quiet hrs…other than snoring and some traffic it was quiet. On a positive, the pit toilet was really clean and spacious. And the ranger at check in was so nice.

Close knit camping , very full , but nicely maitnained

Campsites are pretty close and there is no shade, trees are planted just still very small! Bathroom was nice, shower house a little crusty but not the worst we’ve been too!

    Place is a scam

Wwhatever do you,  find somewhere else. God forbid you have to deal with the same thing we did. Just try calling, you'll see that there is no customer service, so when they over charge you,  good luck getting your money back.

    BEWARE of owner!

Beware! I booked this campground over a year ago. I had to change plans due to family matter which prevented us from visiting this campground. I spoke with Jeff in October and he said not an issue and would refund my money. After multiple phone calls, he still hasnt refunded my money. He is now refusing to take my calls. Jeff is a liar, cheat and dishonest owner that shouldnt be trusted. If he turns this problem around I will update. We visited Gitche Gumee RV Park, no overnight stay. UPDATE: Jeff still refuses to talk to me. He is the worst Campground owner I have come across in my 3 1/2 yrs of full timing.

Camp sites are WAY too close together

I can hear my neighbors talking at their campsite from mine. We are packed in here like sardines.

Beautiful area, though. Caught a rainbow just as we were setting up camp. And they had wood and ice.

    Nice State park!

Really nice park! Some sites suffer from rather uneven parking spots with odd fire pit placements. There are plenty of really nice spots however. The Forrest is mature and very pretty, deer and other wildlife are abundant….including the Canada geese who leave their greasy calling cards all over the grassy lakeside areas. The nearby town has most of what you need. Overall, nice and quiet state park!

    Nice Park

Older well established state park. Has high usage in summer. Being older, many lots in modern area are close together. Decent restroom/shower building. Poor wifi reception.

    Nice Weekend Spot

Nice spot to hit up for the weekend. Fairly large sites and the bathhouse was rather clean. Downside if your into biking there isn’t much options other than the roadways. Didn’t check out the beach as it was cool out but seems pretty decent with large grassy area.

    Nice Park - Wrong Time

Heading across the upper UP from upper Wisconsin and needed a one night stay to dump tanks, etc. The location was great and the park nice enough. Just happened to be there during the last ‘get the camping in with the kids before school starts’ time of the year. Dump station was fine and suited our needs. Verizon signal good as well. Easy in and out with our 28’ pull behind.

    Great experience!

I called to see if they had room about 3 weeks out. We were just looking for a weekend stay. Everywhere else was booked so I wasn’t hopeful. The owner answered the phone, even gave me a little background about the place- and was happy to take my booking. He accepted my card over the phone without issue. He did not assign us a site until we arrived however which initially made me nervous. But we ended up with a great spot and we were happy. It is nice and wooded through most of the park. There are several buildings onsite that we didn’t get to peek into due to other plans around the area. We will definitely be back! Something to note: we had zero cell service though att. There was internet supplied in the park, but it disappeared the 2nd morning. I inquired on the internet and was told there wasn’t a problem. We will just plan for that next time.

    Poor Refund Policy

Their policy as stated on their website is no refunds for any reason. I get that, if you can't rent it out to someone else. You should also be making sure to state that when people call to make reservations and then you follow it up in writing in an e-mail along with detailed charges. But, our reservations were not made online and the policy was no stated on the phone and nothing was e-mailed. My parents are elderly and this was to be their last trip before we sold the camper because they no longer get around very well. My mother fell and sustained a serious break to her leg a week before the trip. I called the campground and asked if there was anything they could do about even a partial refund. The woman answering the phone said she would talk to the owner and call back. If they could rent out the space, well maybe we could get my parents almost$400 back. They did not e-mail any kind of receipt. If it couldn't be rented and you didn't want to take that loss as a business, that is understandable. But, they never called back. They just charged the money. We had a friend check out the campground on the nights my parents were to stay there. They rented this spot to someone else each and every night! And, they still charged charged my parents almost $400 for a 4 night stay that they never made claiming they could come back any time this year. That won't be possible since the camper is being sold. I understand no refunds is the policy, but really?! Double dipping like that is a dishonest policy to have. Leading someone to believe you might help them out due to extenuating circumstances and then not doing anything but gouging them without a word is a bad business practice. Renting the space over the phone to an elderly person and never telling them about the policy to begin with or following up with e-mail is also a bad business practice.

    Nice place to base camp.

Overall, it’s a very nice park.  Sites are mostly level & of adequate size.  Bathrooms & showers are top notch (relatively speaking).  There’s a 3/4 mile trail at back of park that well short, is quite nice.  The campground itself is quiet, the noise from hwy 41 on the other hand, is noticeable yet not a dealbreaker.  Well situated to check out the area.

    Great resort campground

We normally like more remote camping, but there aren’t a lot of choices around Marquette. We stayed in the upper loop at site 77, it’s far from the rest of the camp and the sites are nicely space out. Immaculate bathrooms and showers. The resort has WiFi but we couldn’t get it at our site. Kids loved the pool. Easy trail access to the mountain bike park! We will likely stay here again

    Ridiculous Rules. Won’t refund $$$.

Reserved a spot here as part of my cross country overlanding trip.  It was a basic electric campsite outside.  I drove into the ahem, campground and the first thing you see are a bunch of prefabbed cabins - pretty cheesy.  Went to check in at the lodge.  Small bar, and a beer cooler filled with no beer (lol).  The girl at front desk was very nice and informative.  She gave be about 10 pieces of paperwork and wristbands (really!  I’m just camping for the night!!!).  Then explained the myriad of rules in order to camp.  First o e was no smoking at your outdoor site!  Lol.  If she found ashes at the site, I would be charged a fine- lol.  I asked for my $$ back, but you can’t cancel.  What a joke.  If you smoke weeed, of if your campfire ash looks like a cigarette ash, you’ll get fined.  Avoid this place at all costs if you are vanlife, over landers or partake in the green stuff, this is not the place for you.  If your camping approach is Martha Stewart meets kohls, have at it!

    Worth a second stay!

Have stayed here twice! Both at hike-in sites surrounded by woods and neighbors far enough away but friendly when encountered. Lots of RV and other tent and camper options as well, smartly planned campground. Superb plumbing facilities ( didn’t use the showers but they looked clean and private rooms for each stall) and even better beach, picnic area with volleyball and tennis, endless hiking and boating opportunities. This park offers it all!

    Road noise is awful

This campground is right next to the highway and the traffic noise goes on all night. Granted, there is a beautiful view of the bay since there is no tree line to buffer the noise, but it’s very difficult to enjoy that view due to the constant racket. I will not be back.

    Well-maintained State Park

Nice campground right on Lake Michigamme, variety of sites (tents, cabins, electric hook-ups), big clean beach, showers. AT&T was okay, ended up using it for internet over Starlink, which was spotty due to trees. Son had a good time skateboarding and using the playground. We've stayed twice now and likely will again. I did notice the AED was missing from the beach house/laundry area....otherwise it seems accessible.
