Gratiot River County Park - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Gratiot River County Park once provided direct access to Lake Superior shoreline with the Gratiot River running across the road from campsites. The county-managed facility featured a small number of well-spaced sites that offered privacy between camping groups. Campers could watch sunsets over the lake and search for rocks along the beach in the morning hours.

The park permanently closed to camping due to ongoing issues with visitor impact and maintenance challenges. Reviewers noted problems with trash accumulation, improper waste disposal, and damage to vegetation from campers cutting green trees for firewood. For those exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula, Sunset Bay RV Resort & Campground provides lakeside camping options to the northeast.

Once beloved for lakefront sites with excellent privacy, this park permanently closed due to environmental damage and maintenance issues caused by irresponsible visitors.

Use to be free

I was born and raised up near there. 'BEFORE' they re-did it, you could go down with your four wheeler, ride it on the beach. Then the tourist found out about it and TRASHED the camp sites. County took over and you have this.

Camping No Longer Allowed

One of my favorite places in the Keweenaw. Unfortunately, the county commission is no longer allowing camping at the park. Visitors were not respectful of the park. Trash and human waste was piling up. Vegetation and wildlife were being harmed--green trees were being cut for campfires. Leave no trace and everything will be fine. But if you destroy our public places, we won't have them to take our children to.

Mouth of the Gratiot

This is one of our favorite spots to camp. It is located directly on Lake Superior and the Gratiot River is on the other side of the road. There are a few camp sites which is why I can't give this place a five star rating. If you are lucky enough to get a spot here you will not be disappointed with your stay. I encourage anyone to bring their own wood. This place gets busy and wood around the sites are extremely picked over. On the plus side, these sites are spaced nicely apart so you won't be around other people and you have a good amount of privacy. We love that we are able to watch the sunset on the lake at night and rock pick in the morning. This place is special.
