Twelve sites, forested terrain, and a small swimming area at Benedict Pond define the scale and character of Beartown State Forest Campground in Monterey, Massachusetts. Four of those sites sit directly on the pond, and they tend to be the first claimed. The campground runs from late May through early October, with sites priced at $14 per night and reservations available.
Wildlife sightings come up in multiple reviews, as does the relative quiet that comes from keeping the site count low. The forest setting means shade is consistent across the property, and the hiking trails that thread through Beartown State Forest give campers access to rustic routes without driving anywhere. Fishing and swimming round out the on-site activity options, and the pond provides a focal point for both. One practical note from reviewers: firewood must be purchased on-site, which can be a problem for late arrivals who find the supply depleted.
RV campers should know the maximum length is 25 feet, and the campground does provide electric, water, and sewer hookups. Staff responsiveness gets positive marks across reviews. "Probably the cleanest bathrooms I've ever used at a state park," notes Jared D., which stands out as a recurring point of pride for the facility. Pets are welcome.
Campers planning a longer stay in the Berkshires region can look at campgrounds near Great Barrington for additional options, or consider nearby lodging-style properties such as Thornewood Inn and Windflower Inn as alternatives. Beartown's small footprint makes it worth booking early if a pond-side site is the goal.
