Walmart — Columbia Store

Paved, well-lit, and easy to navigate, this Walmart Supercenter parking lot off Route 29 in Columbia functions as a practical overnight stop for RVers and road-trippers moving through central Maryland. The lot stays active during store hours but quiets down later in the evening, and rigs do best along the back perimeter or outer edges where traffic thins out. Restrooms and supplies are available inside during operating hours. Campers planning a longer stay in the region can find camping near Columbia with more natural surroundings, but for a one-night stop with immediate access to food, fuel, and a flat surface, this one delivers.

Practical Overnight in the Heart of Columbia

Located just off Route 29 in Columbia, this Walmart Supercenter is a highly convenient overnight option with quick access from major roads and a large, easy-to-navigate parking lot. The surface is paved and generally well-maintained, with mostly level areas that make setup simple after a long drive. The lot can be active during store hours, but there is plenty of room to spread out. RVs and trucks will want to park along the far edges of the lot, especially toward the back perimeter or outer sides, where there is less traffic and more space to settle in comfortably.

Immediate amenities are excellent. You have full access to Walmart during operating hours, including restrooms and a wide range of food and supplies, plus numerous nearby restaurants, gas stations, and small shops within a short drive. The lot is well-lit throughout the night, which adds a strong sense of safety, though you should expect some ongoing activity and light traffic noise given the central location. It quiets down later in the evening, but this is not a completely still or secluded stop.

Beyond the immediate retail area, you are close to Columbia’s extensive network of parks and walking paths, as well as Lake Kittamaqundi and the surrounding green spaces that offer a peaceful morning reset. There are also grocery stores, coffee shops, and additional retail centers nearby if you need to restock or recharge. While it leans more practical than scenic, the overall convenience and accessibility make this a dependable overnight stop in the Columbia area.

While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the 5 most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience (EZ on- and off-access), safety & security, quality (of facilities), peace & quiet and amenities (either on-site or nearby).

Convenience: 5

Safety & Security: 4

Quality: 4

Peace & Quiet: 3

Amenities: 5

Overall Score: 4

Happy Overnighting!
