      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Cherry Hill Park

      My All Time Favorite…so far

This park is top notch. The grounds are immaculate. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a lovely gift shop. We were in the 400 sites and it was nice and shady. Though you are close to highways I don’t recall hearing and noise. I love that they have shuttles to DC., walking trails and a large dog park. This is my all time favorite park so far and I need to go back.

      Washington DC / Capitol KOA

      Good location

Nice campground, maintained very well and clean. Laundry room and Propane fill on site so that was nice. RV Site was fairly level and easy to get into. Some sites are a bit close together and not long enough to keep your tow vehicle hooked up. A bit inconvenient if you’re only there for 1 night.

      Point Lookout State Park

      5 stars! Beautiful, clean, magical

Magical stay at Point Lookout — New Tulip Loop (Full Hook‑Up) and I’m already planning a return. The whole park feels peaceful and safe, the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and our site is clean and well‑maintained. The loop’s energy felt magical — quiet, restorative, and tucked into the trees so it felt private but not isolated. Full hookups were convenient and reliable; the site layout is roomy and pet‑friendly, with an easy walk to a beautiful dog beach so our pup had a blast. We walked to stunning beaches and spent afternoons watching water and sky at the tip of the peninsula — spectacular views where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake. The park’s Civil War history and lighthouse added fascinating, walkable sites to explore between beach time, giving the stay both recreation and depth. Clean facilities, helpful staff at the park office, and well-marked trails made everything low‑stress and enjoyable. If you want a peaceful, historic, pet‑friendly Class A spot with full hookups and gorgeous nearby beaches, Tulip Loop at Point Lookout is five stars from me.

      Matoaka Beach Cottages

      Fantastic location with winderful hosts

Private campground with cabins and tent sites. Tent sites are first come, first service so call ahead to ensure the space is available. The host family was very nice and easy to work with and talk to. Fire pits were at tent sites and past the office was beach access into Chesapeake Bay. There are trash bins and porta potty’s on sight that are all maintained and kept clean. Beautiful sights and plenty to do in the area with DC being roughly an 40-60 minutes away.

    Guide to Hughesville

Cabin camping options near Hughesville, Maryland range from rustic units to fully equipped cottages within a 40-mile radius. Located in southern Maryland about 30 miles southeast of Washington DC, the area experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters with occasional snowfall. Water access sites along the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay provide waterfront cabin options during the April-October peak season.

    What to do

Fossil hunting at beach access points: Westmoreland State Park Campground features unique paleontological opportunities. "We came from Pa/De and wanted to look for sharks teeth. It was beautiful here so we decided to stay the night," notes Sara A. The park preserves fossil-rich shorelines with specimens dating back millions of years.

Disc golf courses: Pohick Bay Campground offers an 18-hole course through wooded terrain. Rachel L. recommends "taking in a game of disc golf on their 18 hole course" during your stay. The course winds through diverse forest settings with defined fairways and challenging terrain.

Beach swimming: Point Lookout State Park provides designated swimming beaches with sandy bottoms. "The swimming beach was busy, but the water was clean with a sandy bottom. There is a separate beach for dogs," reports Tara S. The park maintains clearly marked swimming areas with seasonal lifeguards.

    What campers like

Private campsites with natural screening: At Bull Run Regional Park, sites face wooded areas for privacy. "The sites are all pull-through off the roads through the campground. So your camper faces the woods and you feel like you're all alone," explains Roberta K. The layout creates buffer zones between neighboring sites with vegetation barriers.

Clean, well-maintained bathhouses: Westmoreland State Park receives consistent praise for facility cleanliness. "Bath houses are heated which is amazing," reports RL. Most cabin camping facilities offer 24-hour access to bathhouse facilities with regular maintenance schedules.

Waterfront cabin rentals: Matoaka Beach Cottages offers direct Chesapeake Bay views and private beach access. "We tent camped at Matoka Cabins and it was a beautiful Peaceful camping trip! Out spot was very private and you could see the bay and hear the waves," writes Courtney K. The cabins provide unobstructed water views from elevated positions along the shoreline.

    What you should know

Drainage issues during rain: Some campgrounds experience standing water after storms. At Adventure Bound Washington DC, sites can become muddy. "The site was part Gravel and mostly mud/grass. There was trash on site," reports Cynthia D. Many cabins are elevated on platforms to mitigate ground moisture problems.

Insect activity near water: Biting insects can be problematic, especially in summer months. "The bugs were killer. Luckily, there was a nice strong breeze blowing off the water during the vast majority of our stay. However, the second it stopped, the bugs descended on us," warns Jen V. about Point Lookout State Park. Mosquitoes, gnats and biting flies are most active during dawn and dusk hours.

Reservation requirements vary seasonally: Endeavor Point experiences different occupancy patterns throughout the year. "We spent part of Labor Day weekend here, and there was almost nobody else there. The second night, one other pair of campers showed up. I found it super strange that more people didn't take advantage of a campground on the river with availability," observes allison W. Weekend reservations during summer months often require 3-6 month advance booking.

    Tips for camping with families

Scheduled activities: Cherry Hill Park offers organized programming for children. "Mini golf, two pools, arcade, 24 hour laundry, a store and office open early and late! Splash pad, paved roads for scootering," writes Jennifer H. Many cabin facilities offer weekend activity schedules during summer months.

Family-oriented cabin layouts: Bull Run Regional Park provides family-friendly accommodations. "Our family stayed here in a cabin on a long weekend trip to DC. The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish," shares Bridget H. Family cabins typically feature bunk bed configurations to maximize sleeping capacity.

Swimming options for different ages: Pohick Bay Regional Park includes water recreation for various skill levels. "This is definitely a family campground. So my activities for kids and places to run around. Pirate's Cove waterpark is definitely a highlight in summer," states Anne K. Most waterfront cabin facilities maintain designated shallow areas for younger swimmers.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Smallwood State Park Campground offers relatively flat terrain. "Our site was perfectly level. Most sites appeared fairly level," notes Laure D. Cabin rental sites typically feature prepared gravel or concrete pads with minimal slope.

Campground amenities for extended stays: When renting cabins near Hughesville for longer periods, amenity access becomes important. "This park has a sad history and is probably haunted, but it's got ocean bay views, fishing, and historical recreations to visit. The campground is really nice, with water and sewer connections on the tulip loop," explains Lori about Point Lookout State Park. Many cabin facilities provide on-site laundry and shower access for multi-night stays.
